Those that arise without being eaten, having been done and accumulated, by the very deeds done and accumulated by themselves, who else would experience them individually? Monks, deeds done and accumulated do not mature in the external realm of earth, nor do they mature in the realm of water, nor do they mature in the realm of fire, nor do they mature in the realm of wind. Thus, deeds of virtue and non-virtue, having been done and accumulated, will mature in the aggregates, realms, and sources that are grasped. Actions, even through hundreds of eons, are not wasted; when the assembly and time are met, they will ripen into fruits for embodied beings. Monks, in the past, in the city of Varanasi, there was a king named Brahma-given, whose kingdom was prosperous, flourishing, peaceful, and fertile, filled with people and many people, with quarrels, battles, external enemies, and internal strife completely pacified, free from thieves, famine, and disease, allowing rice, sugarcane groves, cattle, and buffalo to be fully cultivated. He, a righteous king, allowed the kingdom to be ruled by dharma. At another time, fortune-tellers prophesied that it would not rain for twelve years. King Brahma-given had an announcement made in Varanasi, saying, "Whoever has food for twelve years should stay. Whoever does not, should leave and return after twelve years." At that time, in Varanasi, there was a householder named Protected Treasure, who was wealthy, had much wealth, great enjoyment, wide and extensive possessions, possessed the wealth of Vaishravana, and rivaled Vaishravana in wealth. He called the treasurer and said, "Treasurer, do I have enough food for twelve years for myself and my family?" The treasurer replied, "Master, you do." At times when Buddhas do not appear, solitary Buddhas, who are compassionate towards the poor and destitute, delight in remote dwellings, and are like rhinoceroses, alone, becoming objects of veneration in the world, appear in the world. At one time, five hundred solitary Buddhas, wandering and traveling, went to Varanasi and went to the householder Protected Treasure.

Then (they) said: 'Householder, can you provide for us five hundred renunciates what is needed for twelve years?' He said: 'Venerable ones, please ask the storekeeper and report later.' Then he called the storekeeper and said: 'Hey, storekeeper, do I, with my retinue, and these five hundred renunciates, have food for twelve years?' He said: 'Master, yes.' The householder Dhāraṇīdhara said to those five hundred solitary Buddhas: 'Venerable ones, yes, please stay, I will offer.' They stayed there. After some time, another five hundred solitary Buddhas came wandering, arrived at Varanasi, they also came to the householder Dhāraṇīdhara, and then said: 'Householder, can you provide for us five hundred renunciates what is needed for twelve years?' He said: 'Venerable ones, since you have already been offered, why do you ask again?' The householder (thought), those are those, we are we. 'Venerable ones, please ask the storekeeper and report later.' Then he called the storekeeper and said: 'Hey, storekeeper, do I, with my retinue, and these one thousand renunciates, have food for twelve years?' He said: 'Master, yes.' He said to those other five hundred renunciates: 'Venerable ones, yes, please stay, I will offer.' They also stayed there. He had a house of charity built. He also appointed a manager of charity and a guide. There, every day, one thousand solitary Buddhas ate food. At that time, one solitary Buddha passed away, and did not come that day, the daughter of the householder Dhāraṇīdhara said: 'Father, today there is one less renunciate.' He said: 'Daughter, what is it like?' She turned her back (to the crowd) and said: 'Father, it is like this.' Monks, at that time, that time, the daughter of the householder Dhāraṇīdhara was this Supreme Crooked One, because she had blocked the solitary Buddha with a staff, the ripening of that karma caused her to become hunchbacked. Then, the monks became doubtful and asked the Blessed One Buddha, who cuts off all doubts: 'Venerable, what karma did the Supreme Crooked One do, that she can retain hearing...'
