Nanda said: Very well, do so, what will you do? Offer umbrella food to the Sangha of monks including the Buddha. Householder, generate a vast mind and offer umbrella food! He came. He said, "Venerable one, please wait a moment." The venerable Ānanda said to the Blessed One, "Blessed One, that householder said, 'Has Ānanda arrived?' I replied, 'He has not.' Then he said, 'Please wait a moment.'" After waiting a moment, the Blessed One again said to the venerable Ānanda, "Ānanda, go and tell the householder, 'The time has come, please offer food. If the food spoils, what will you do?'" The venerable Ānanda replied, "As you command, Blessed One." Then he went to tell the householder. The householder said, "Venerable one, has Ānanda arrived?" The venerable Ānanda said, "Householder, he has not come." The householder said, "Venerable one, please wait a moment." The venerable Ānanda said to the Blessed One, "Blessed One, that householder said, 'Has Ānanda arrived?' I replied, 'He has not.' Then he said, 'Please wait a moment.'" The Blessed One said, "Ānanda, go and tell the householder, 'If Ānanda has not come, will you not offer food?'" The venerable Ānanda, having heard the Blessed One's instruction, went and said these words to the householder. The householder said, "Venerable one, I will not offer it." The venerable Ānanda said to the Blessed One, "Blessed One, he will not offer it." Then, at that time, the Blessed One spoke this verse: "All that is controlled by others is suffering, All that is self-controlled is happiness. Common things can be harmful, Relationships are extremely difficult to sever." When the time was near noon, Ānanda arrived and said, "Householder, why are you not offering?" The householder said, "Venerable one, you said before that I should not offer until I arrived, and now you say this?" Ānanda was speechless and remained silent. Then that householder began to offer.
