The past (Buddha) said to the monks: Monks, in monasteries and under trees, and in empty houses, and in valleys and caves, and in grass huts and uncovered places, and in cemeteries and forests, and at the foot of mountains and in remote dwellings, practice meditation! Monks, be careful in your actions and do not regret it later! This is my teaching and subsequent instruction. After the Blessed One spoke thus to the monks, the monks entered monasteries and under trees, and in empty houses, and in valleys and caves, and in grass huts and uncovered places, and in cemeteries and forests, and at the foot of mountains and in remote dwellings. Some meditate on the slopes of Mount Sumeru, some on the seven golden mountains, some on the great Anavatapta lake, some on the banks of slowly flowing ponds, and some in villages, towns, countries, and rural areas that are in accordance with yogis, and in various directions of the king's palace. Mount Sumeru, the king of mountains, has 80,000 yojanas submerged in water, and 80,000 yojanas rising above the water, so it has 160,000 yojanas. Each side of Mount Sumeru, the king of mountains, has 80,000 yojanas, so they have 320,000 yojanas. Mount Sumeru, the king of mountains, is made of four kinds of precious jewels, beautiful in appearance, pleasing to the eye, and very beautiful. There, the dragon kings Delight and Near Delight were born, and the two of them wrapped around it three times with their bodies and remained, and in the kalpa they became the foundation, which even the king of birds, Garuda, could not shake. The two of them thought: The place of merit for us two has appeared, thinking thus, the two of them wrapped around it completely with stinginess, so during the day they blew discordant winds three times, which caused the mountain goats and many birds living on the slopes of Mount Sumeru to suffer untimely. There, some monks who were meditating on the slopes of Mount Sumeru were also blown gray and sparse by that discordant wind, becoming thin and weak, their necks and

Having become like that without obtaining a body, after those three summer months had passed, when they arrived in Shravasti to prostrate at the feet of the Blessed One, the monks saw them and said: Venerable ones, welcome! Welcome! Where have you come here from? Where did you promise to spend the summer retreat? They said: Venerable ones, we have come here from the terraces of Mount Meru. We promised to spend the summer retreat on the terraces of Mount Meru. The monks said: Venerable ones, why have you become pale and haggard, thin and weak, without necks and bodies? They said: Venerable ones, on the terraces of Mount Meru, the dragon kings Nanda and Upananda were born, and their bodies coiled around it three times and remained there, existing for an eon, holding the earth, and the king of birds with beautiful wings could not pull them out. The two of them thought: This place of merit for us two has appeared, thinking thus, the two of them completely coiled around with stinginess, sending out inharmonious winds three times a day, so that the deer and many birds living on the terraces of Mount Meru suffered improperly. We too have become pale and haggard, thin and weak, without necks and bodies, because of that inharmonious wind. The monks said: Venerable ones, can you not subdue those two? They said: Venerable ones, for the time being, those two are not to be subdued by us. Then who will subdue them? They will be subdued by a great Shravaka, and when they said this, the monks reported it to the Blessed One. Then the Blessed One thought, who will subdue those two? Seeing and knowing that they would be subdued by the great monk Maudgalyayana's son, he said to the venerable great Maudgalyayana's son: Maudgalyayana's son, on the terraces of Mount Meru are the dragon kings Nanda and Upananda, go and subdue them! The venerable great Maudgalyayana's son replied: Venerable One, as you say. Having heard this from the Blessed One, he entered into such a samadhi, thinking how?

If he entered into samadhi, he would disappear from Shravasti and reach the slopes of Mount Meru, abiding in such a samadhi. At that time, the two dragon kings, Nanda and Upananda, fell asleep, and he began to strike a cymbal to awaken them, but they did not wake up. He began to press down on them, but even so, they did not wake up. He entered into their bellies and thundered like a great cloud, but even so, they did not wake up. He wrapped the king of mountains, Mount Meru, seven times with the body of a great dragon, and then sat on top making a great coil. The two of them were awakened by the heavy burden, and when they saw a great dragon pressing down on them, they thought: 'A great dragon with great magical powers has appeared, and we two will disappear from this place, let's flee.' Thinking this, they were afraid. They manifested themselves in the color of Brahmin boys and began to flee. Then, the venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana withdrew the manifested magical transformations. He sat in front of the two of them and said: 'Where are the two dragon kings going?' The two of them said: 'A great dragon with great magical powers has appeared, and we two will disappear from here, so we are going to flee.' He said: 'Come here, let's see what that dragon is like.' The two of them returned with him, and when he disappeared, the two of them said: 'Venerable one, are you not joking with us?' He said: 'That's right, then what wrong have we two done? You two old men did not think that the messenger of the Buddha had come.' 'Venerable one, are you the messenger of the Buddha?' 'Yes, I am the messenger of the Buddha.' 'Venerable one, if you are the messenger of the Buddha, please tell us what we two should do.' 'Come, let's go to the presence of the Bhagavan.' 'Venerable one, do not deceive us, let's go like that.' Then, the venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana, taking the dragon kings Nanda and Upananda, went to where the Bhagavan was, and having arrived, bowed his head to the two feet of the Bhagavan and sat on one side.
