He said, "God, what is the sin? I will not do that. What is manifest? God, do you have manifest faith in the Bhagavan?" The king said, "That has been seen. At that time, you were called the Shramana Gautama, but now you are called the Bhagavan. Like this, for the sake of someone like you, I will not report to the Bhagavan. For the sake of the blue lotus one, I will report to the Bhagavan." Having said that, he went to where the Bhagavan was, and having arrived, he bowed his head to the two feet of the Bhagavan, and then sat to one side. Having sat to one side, King Sharpa of Bhasa said these words to the Bhagavan: "Venerable one, what deeds did the five hundred women, including the blue lotus one, do? They were burned by fire, and the hunchback escaped from the hole in the water trough." The Bhagavan said, "Great King, it is precisely they themselves who have accumulated the deeds of obtaining karmic results, transforming causes and conditions, appearing as quickly as lightning, and not being devoured by ghosts. Who else will experience the deeds they themselves have done and accumulated? Great King, the deeds done and accumulated will not ripen in the external realm of earth, will not ripen in the realm of water, will not ripen in the realm of fire, will not ripen in the realm of wind. Like this, the good and bad deeds done and accumulated will ripen in the aggregates, elements, and sense bases that have been taken. Even after hundreds of thousands of kalpas, deeds will not be lost, and once causes and conditions come together, they will manifest as fruits in sentient beings. Great King, in the past in the city of Varanasi, there was a king named Brahma-datta, whose kingdom was prosperous with wealth, peaceful and bountiful, filled with people and many inhabitants, wars, conflicts, external enemies, and internal strife were completely pacified, there were no thieves, famine, and disease, he caused rice, sugarcane forests, cattle, and buffalo to be abundant, and he ruled the country with dharma, and ruled the kingdom with dharma. In the time when Buddhas do not appear, he had compassion for the inferior Pratyekabuddhas and the poor, loved remote dwellings, and lived alone like a rhinoceros.

Those who have become worthy recipients of the world appeared in the world. How so? A Pratyekabuddha, while traveling and walking, went to Varanasi and stayed in a hut in a certain garden there. Five hundred consorts of King Brahmadatta came to that garden. Those consorts bathed in the play pond and shivered from the cold. Then, the noble consort said to a maidservant: 'Daughter, you are shivering from the extreme cold, go and set fire to this hut!' She lit a lamp and went, and seeing the Pratyekabuddha, she said to the noble consort: 'Goddess, there is a renunciate here.' She said: 'Whether it is a renunciate or someone else, set it on fire!' She did not set it on fire, but fled. Then, That noble consort became angry and set fire to it herself. The Pratyekabuddha came out. The other consorts also said: 'Goddess, you have done well to set it on fire, let us all set it on fire!' and rejoiced in approval. That great Pratyekabuddha thought: 'These consorts' afflictions are too heavy, it would be bad if they fell, I should save them with my hand.' Then, like the king of geese spreading his wings, he manifestly rose into the sky above and began to perform miracles of burning, shining, raining, and producing lightning. Because ordinary people quickly place their minds on miracles, those consorts, like trees cut from their roots, fell at the feet of that Pratyekabuddha, saying: 'Worthy recipient, please descend! Please descend! Please grant us salvation from the mire of afflictions!' That Pratyekabuddha, out of compassion for those consorts, descended from the sky above. They made offerings to him and prostrated at his two feet, making this aspiration: 'Whatever harm we have done to such a worthy recipient, may it not be in accordance with that karmic result; whatever offerings we have made, may this root of virtue make us even more excellent than this.'

May I obtain such qualities as pleasing the teacher of the world and not causing displeasure! At that time, the queen of the great king, the holy consort of King Brahma-given, was this blue-lotus-colored woman. At that time, the other four hundred and ninety-nine women were these four hundred and ninety-nine women. At that time, the maidservant was this Curasrestha. Because they burned the hut of the solitary Buddha and rejoiced, the ripening of that karma caused them to be burned in the great hells for many years, and even now, until they see the truth, they are still burned by fire. Curasrestha was not able to set the fire successfully, so now she has escaped from the water hole. Because they made offerings to the solitary Buddha and made vows, they now see the truth in my presence. They pleased me, the teacher who is far more excellent than countless billions of solitary Buddhas, and did not displease me. Great King, thus, the ripening of purely black karma is purely black, and the ripening of purely white karma is also purely white. The ripening of guiding karma is also guiding. Great King, therefore, one should abandon purely black karma and guiding karma, and strive to practice purely white karma. Great King, you should learn in this way. Then, King Sharpa of Badsas was exceedingly pleased and rejoiced at the words spoken by the Blessed One, and bowed his head to the two feet of the Blessed One, and then departed from the presence of the Blessed One. Vinaya-vibhaṅga, seventy-eighth fascicle. The monks arose with doubts and asked the Blessed Buddha, who cuts off all doubts: "Venerable Curasrestha, what karma did she commit that caused her to become hunchbacked?" The Blessed One taught: "Monks, Curasrestha herself accumulated karma, transformed the conditions, and dwelt nearby like a ray of light, she is an evil spirit."
