Thus, that is the power of the great disciple Maudgalyayana. If the great disciple Maudgalyayana had not thought of you, including your retinue of consorts, young men, ministers, people of the town, and people of the countryside, then today it would not have become the sphere of activity of Shravasti (Jetavana). That is the power of the great disciple Maudgalyayana thinking of you, including your retinue of consorts, young men, ministers, people of the town, and people of the countryside, so have great faith in him. The king asked: World Honored One, indeed it is the power of the great disciple Maudgalyayana, but how can I know that it is not the power of the World Honored One, nor the other great Shravaka disciples? Great King, that is not my power, nor is it the power of other great Shravaka disciples, but it is the power of the great disciple Maudgalyayana. If you are hesitant and doubtful, throw these heavenly flowers, the lotus, the utpala, the kumuda, the white lotus, and the mandara flowers, on the ground. As soon as he threw them on the ground, they immediately turned into vajras with a single point, wheels, great arrows, and weapons with a single point, and so on. Seeing those weapons, he became frightened and asked: World Honored One, what is this? The World Honored One replied: Great King, this is because you have generated great hatred towards the Naga King Nanda and Upananda, and that is why this has happened. The king asked: Venerable One, I don't even remember seeing the Naga King Nanda and Upananda, how could I have generated great hatred? Great King, I will remind you. Venerable One, please let the World Honored One remind me. Great King, do you remember that two householders were listening to the Dharma in front of me, but they did not rise to greet you? World Honored One, I remember. Great King, those two householders were the Naga King Nanda and Upananda. He asked: World Honored One, did those two not quarrel? Great King, those two did not quarrel, but the milk offerings of those two quarreled. World Honored One, I

How should I atone to those two? Great king, you should ask for forgiveness. Blessed One, those two are on the terraces of Mount Meru, and I am here, how should I ask for forgiveness from those two? The Blessed One said: Great king, those two will come here on the eighth, fourteenth, and fifteenth to pay homage to my feet, and you should also come here on the eighth, fourteenth, and fifteenth, and I will show you those two, and you should ask for forgiveness. He asked: Venerable one, should I touch the feet of those two? The Blessed One said: Great king, you should not touch the feet of those two, because those who are base pay homage to the feet, while those who are noble start from the hands, you should extend your right hand and ask the two dragon kings for forgiveness, and they will forgive you. He asked: Venerable one, I am not mistaken, I will do so. Having said this, he bowed his head to the feet of the Blessed One and left. After some time, the dragon kings Nanda and Upananda came to the terraces of Mount Meru, manifested themselves as householders, and went to where the Blessed One was, bowed their heads to the feet of the Blessed One, and sat down on one side. King Prasenajit of Kosala also went to where the Blessed One was, bowed his head to the feet of the Blessed One, and sat down on one side, and the Blessed One signaled to him. Then, King Prasenajit of Kosala rose from his seat, placed his upper robe on one shoulder, extended his right hand and said: Two dragon kings, please forgive me. The two said: Great king, we forgive you. Then, King Prasenajit of Kosala asked for forgiveness from the dragon kings Nanda and Upananda, and then, in the presence of the Blessed One, he folded his palms and said to the Blessed One: I offer to the great son Maudgalyayana.

For this reason, could the Blessed One and the community of monks grant me the favor of accepting my offerings for seven days? The Blessed One did not say anything to King Prasenajit of Kosala, indicating his consent. Then, King Prasenajit of Kosala, knowing that the Blessed One's silence meant consent, bowed his head to the Blessed One's feet and left, instructing his ministers: 'Wise ministers, in order to honor the great Maudgalyāyana, I will invite the Blessed One and the community of Śrāvaka monks to accept offerings for seven days. You must decorate the city beautifully and prepare the offerings.' Kings achieve through words, gods achieve through mind, and yogis achieve everything merely by generating intention. Therefore, the ministers, having heard the command from King Prasenajit of Kosala, acted like the will of the gods, decorating the road between Jetavana and Śrāvastī as beautifully as possible, and making Śrāvastī free of stones, tiles, and gravel. They sprinkled sandalwood water, placed fragrant incense containers nearby, hung strings of silk, erected banners and flags, scattered various flowers, making it as delightful as the Sudharma Hall, the assembly place of the gods. The food was also abundant in color, aroma, and taste, accompanied by various saffrons, and adorned with various exquisite offerings. With such abundant offerings, they offered food to the Buddha and the community of monks in the king's palace each day. At that time, at night, a fire broke out in the places where food was being cooked, burning many elephants with excellent limbs belonging to King Prasenajit of Kosala. After the seven days of offerings had passed, King Prasenajit of Kosala had an announcement made in Śrāvastī: 'In Śrāvastī, no one shall light a fire at night. If anyone lights a fire, they shall be punished with a fine of sixty Kārṣāpaṇas, or be put in handcuffs and put to death.'
