Having heard of the shaggy-haired demon, he separated the defiled from the shaggy-haired demon and established them in the five ascetic practices, and taught the Dharma in this way. Monks, at that time, the great hero who was the merchant leader was myself. At that time, the shaggy-haired demon was the Yaksha Dwelling-in-the-Woods. At that time, I also separated the defiled from this and established them in the five ascetic practices. Now, I also separate the defiled from this and establish them in the refuge and the precepts. Furthermore, the monks arose with doubts, and in order to dispel all doubts, they asked the Blessed One. Venerable One, what deeds did the lineage-holding Dwelling-in-the-Woods commit that he was offered as a sacrificial cake to the Yaksha as soon as he was born, and the Blessed One strived to liberate him? The Blessed One said: Monks, the lineage-holding Dwelling-in-the-Woods himself accumulated deeds, transformed the conditions, dwelt like lightning, and became one who would not be eaten by demons. How could others experience separately the deeds accumulated by the lineage-holding Dwelling-in-the-Woods? Monks, the deeds done and accumulated will not ripen in the external realm of earth, nor will they ripen in the realm of water, nor will they ripen in the realm of fire, nor will they ripen in the realm of wind. In this way, the virtuous and non-virtuous deeds done and accumulated will only ripen in the aggregates, realms, and sources that are grasped. Deeds, even after hundreds of eons, will not be wasted, and when the causes and conditions and time are gathered, they will be transformed into fruits for sentient beings. Monks, in the past, in this very auspicious great eon, when the lifespan of beings reached twenty thousand years, the teacher, the Thus-Gone One, the Arhat, the Perfectly Complete Buddha, endowed with knowledge and conduct, the Blissful One, the Knower of the World, the unsurpassed tamer of beings, the teacher of gods and humans, the Buddha, the Blessed One, Light Protector, appeared in the world. He dwelt near the Deer Park where the sages speak in Varanasi. In his teachings, this one became a layperson. In a certain cliff lived a king.

That person was very fond of crows, so whenever there was a slight matter in the royal palace, he would take a crow in his hand and go to the king. Later, one time, that devotee had some business in the royal palace, so he went there as usual. The king did not fulfill his request, and others said to him, "This king likes crows, so if you want to achieve your wish, offer him a crow." He offered the king a crow, and the king entrusted it to the caretaker of birds, and also fulfilled the devotee's request. That devotee thought, "My offering of a crow was not a good deed, I should redeem it with money." So he gave money to the caretaker of birds, released the crow, and prayed, "May the karma of my offering a crow to the king for the sake of gain not be in accordance with this, and by this root of virtue of my releasing this suffering crow, may I strive to liberate those who are suffering." Monks, that devotee at that time was this present-day Lagye Dronay, and because of the ripening of the karma of his offering a crow to the king for the sake of gain, he was offered as a torma to a yaksha. Later, he felt regret and released the crow and prayed, and because of the ripening of that karma, I strive to liberate him, and I liberated him from the yaksha. Again, the monks arose with doubt and asked the Bhagavan Shakyamuni Buddha, who cuts off all doubts, "Venerable Bhagavan, please see, the Bhagavan has liberated Lagye Dronay from the blue-skinned one and established him in the fruit of non-returning." The Bhagavan said, "Monks, not only now, but in the past as well, I liberated him from a woman with form and established him in the five superknowledges, listen to this. Let famine and disease be absent, and let rice, sugarcane garlands, cattle, and buffaloes be abundant. Let the righteous king, endowed with Dharma, rule the kingdom with Dharma. That priest took a wife from his own clan, and he would play with her, rejoice, and enjoy happiness. As he played, rejoiced, and enjoyed happiness, his wife at another time conceived, and after eight or nine months, she gave birth to a boy whose hands and feet were connected by webs. His relatives gathered and assembled, and on the twenty-first day, they held a grand birth celebration and named the boy. They thought: Because this boy's hands and feet are connected by webs, the boy's name should be 'Webbed Hands and Feet,' and so his name was named 'Webbed Hands and Feet.' Again, he played, rejoiced, and enjoyed happiness, and his wife at another time conceived, and after eight or nine months, she gave birth to a boy whose hands and feet were not connected by webs. His relatives gathered and assembled, and on the twenty-first day, they held a grand birth celebration and named the boy. They thought: Because this boy's hands and feet are not connected by webs, the boy's name should be 'Without Webs,' and so his name was named 'Without Webs.' The two children were raised and grew up. When the elder brother, 'Webbed Hands and Feet,' saw his father acting as a priest in both lawful and unlawful ways, he thought: If I die and become a priest, I too will act as a priest in both lawful and unlawful ways. If I act as a priest in both lawful and unlawful ways and cause beings to fall into hell, that would not be right; in every way, I must renounce the world. So he went to his father and said: Father, will you allow me to renounce the world? The father said: Son, why do you offer sacrifices, give alms, and burn offerings?
