或者，送上浓稠的饮料，心想以此能使这些圣者身体不湿，法衣不潮，受用时感到安乐，这样供养，具备何种策励，能使具信的善男子或善女人，行走、安住、睡眠或不眠时，恒常不断地增长福德，仅仅生起福德，成为由物质所生的福德之业，成为果报极大、利益极大、显现极大、广大极大的第七种福德之基呢？策励具信的善男子或善女人，具备这七种由物质所生的福德之基的福德，或者福德之果，或者说福德之果成熟，仅此而已，不能衡量福德的量，因为如此福德众多，故归入称为大福德聚之数。策励，譬如说，在恒河、亚穆纳河、萨拉尤河、阿夷罗跋提河、摩酰河这五条大河汇入之处，不能衡量水，或者水瓶，或者百个水瓶，或者千个水瓶，或者十万个水瓶有多少。策励，同样，具信的善男子或善女人，具备这七种由物质所生的福德之基的福德，或者福德之果，或者福德之果成熟，也不能衡量福德的量，因为如此福德众多，故归入称为大福德聚之数。如是 说此语时，具寿策励大向薄伽梵如是禀白道：尊者，具备何种，能使具信的善男子或善女人，行走、安住、睡眠或不眠时，恒常不断地增长福德，仅仅生起福德，成为非由物质所生的福德之业，成为果报极大、利益极大、显现极大、广

Or, offering thick drinks, thinking that this will keep these noble ones' bodies dry, their robes unmoistened, and they will feel comfortable when using them, what kind of encouragement is it that, when a son or daughter of good family is endowed with faith, whether walking, staying, sleeping, or not sleeping, constantly and continuously increases merit, only generates merit, becomes a deed of merit arising from material things, and becomes the seventh basis of merit that is extremely fruitful, extremely beneficial, extremely manifest, and extremely vast? Encouragement, a son or daughter of good family endowed with faith, possessing these seven bases of merit arising from material things, the merit, or the fruit of merit, or the ripening of the fruit of merit, is only this much, and the measure of merit cannot be taken, because there is so much merit, it is included in the number called the great accumulation of merit. Encouragement, for example, where these five great rivers, such as the Ganges, the Yamuna, the Sarayu, the Aciravati, and the Mahi, flow together without distinction, the amount of water, or a pot of water, or hundreds of pots of water, or thousands of pots of water, or hundreds of thousands of pots of water, cannot be measured. Is it permissible to establish greatness? The Blessed One said: It is permissible to establish incitement. These seven incitements, if endowed with any one of them, then a son or daughter of good family, endowed with faith, whether walking, staying, sleeping, or not sleeping, will constantly and continuously increase merit, and newly generate merit. This is a basis for meritorious activity that does not arise from material things, and has extremely great fruit, extremely great benefit, extremely great appearance, and extremely great increase. What are the seven? For this incitement, a son or daughter of good family, endowed with faith, hears that the Tathagata or a disciple of the Tathagata is dwelling and relying on a certain town, and having heard this, generates joy and supreme joy, and obtains great roots of virtue that are certain to arise. This is an incitement, if endowed with any one of them, then a son or daughter of good family, endowed with faith, whether walking, staying, sleeping, or not sleeping, will constantly and continuously increase merit, and newly generate merit. This is a basis for meritorious activity that does not arise from material things, and has extremely great fruit, extremely great benefit, extremely great appearance, and extremely great increase. This is the first. Another incitement is that a son or daughter of good family, endowed with faith, hears that the Tathagata or a disciple of the Tathagata is striving to come here, and having heard this, generates joy and supreme joy, and obtains great roots of virtue that are certain to arise.
