After some time, they finally arrived at Kauśāmbī. The stewards of Anāthapiṇḍada saw them and reported to Anāthapiṇḍada, 'Master, you instructed us that if we see people with unprecedented signs and attire, we should report to you.' Those people arrived and waited at the gate. The master said, 'Let them in.' After those people let them in, Anāthapiṇḍada saw them and asked, 'Wise ones, where do you come from?' They said, 'Master, from the south.' The master said, 'Wise ones, what wonders have you seen and heard in the south?' They said, 'Master, for the moment, let us not speak of the other wonders we have seen and heard before. Please listen to us tell of the wonders we have seen and heard there.' The master said, 'Wise ones, speak, and I will listen to those wonders.' They told Anāthapiṇḍada in detail what had happened. Anāthapiṇḍada, upon hearing this, was greatly amazed, gave them food, and then asked, 'Wise ones, where are you going?' They said, 'Master, we are going to Śrāvastī.' The master asked, 'Wise ones, what is there?' They said, 'Master, there is the son of the gods, Gso sbyong ral, who relies on Anāthapiṇḍada, who has taken the eight-limbed upavāsa.' The master said, 'Wise ones, if that is so, then he is a friend of mine whom I have not yet seen. Spend the summer here, and after the summer, come with me.' Those people stayed there for the summer, and after the summer, they went to Śrāvastī. Anāthapiṇḍada said to King Śarpa of Badsa, 'Your Majesty, I have some business to attend to in Śrāvastī. If Your Majesty permits, I will go there.' The king said, 'Master, if that is so, go and accomplish your purpose, and return quickly.' After receiving permission from the king, he went with five hundred ascetics and finally arrived at Śrāvastī, staying and residing in the grove. Anāthapiṇḍada thought, 'Anāthapiṇḍada has come here and is staying in the grove.'

Having heard this, he thought: "It is not in accordance with my custom to allow the householder Sudatta to reside unnoticed. I should have him enter with great respect." So, he had Sudatta enter with great respect, allowed him to rest from the fatigue of the journey, and offered him food. Then, those ascetics arrived and greeted him with words such as, "The householder Anathapindika has come, it is good." Then they said: "Wise ones, where have you come from? Why have you come here?" They said: "Householder, please give us also the uposatha that you gave to the son of the gods." He said: "Wise ones, I do not remember." "Householder, we will remind you." "Wise ones, good." After they reminded him, he said: "Wise ones, do you receive it from me? Or do you receive it from the Blessed One?" "Householder, from whom did you receive it?" "Wise ones, from the Blessed One." "Householder, if that is so, then we also receive it from him." "Wise ones, good, do so." Then he led them to where the Blessed One was. At that time, the Blessed One was teaching the Dharma in front of many hundreds of monks. The Blessed One saw the householder Anathapindika from afar. Having seen him, the Blessed One said to the monks: "Monks, do you see the householder Anathapindika coming from afar?" "Venerable One, we see him." "Monks, the householder Anathapindika comes with a gift, and there is no other gift of the Tathagata like the gift of taming." Then, the householder Anathapindika, with a retinue of five hundred ascetics, bowed his head to the feet of the Blessed One and sat down on one side. Having sat down on one side, the householder Anathapindika said this to the Blessed One: "Venerable One, these five hundred ascetics wish to take the eight-limbed uposatha from the Blessed One. For that reason, may the Blessed One make them take refuge in the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha, and become lay followers."

Thus, they requested to be taught the Dharma. Then, the Blessed One, understanding the thoughts, predispositions, faculties, and nature of those five hundred hermits, taught them the Dharma that would enable them to truly realize the Four Noble Truths, just as those five hundred hermits had manifestly attained the fruit of non-return. Having seen the truth, they prostrated at the feet of the Blessed One and requested, "Venerable one, may we receive ordination and full ordination in the well-spoken Dharma and discipline, obtain the nature of a bhikkhu, and practice the pure conduct in the presence of the Blessed One." The Blessed One ordained them by saying, "Come, bhikkhus," and "Come, bhikkhus! Practice the pure conduct!" As soon as the Blessed One had spoken, their hair fell out, and they were wearing monastic robes. Their hair and beards grew for only seven days, and they naturally held begging bowls and water pots in their hands. They remained in the conduct of bhikkhus who had been fully ordained for a hundred years. It is also said: By the Thus-Gone One's command to 'Come hither,' they possessed bodies with shorn hair and wearing monastic robes, their senses were calmed and subdued, and their bodies were covered by the Buddha's intention. The Blessed One gave them instructions, and through their joy, effort, and diligence, they abandoned all defilements and realized the state of an Arhat. As Arhats, they were free from desire in the three realms, regarding clods of earth and gold as equal, possessing minds like the sky and the palm of the hand. Like sandalwood placed [on an altar], they broke through the shell of ignorance with wisdom, attained wisdom, clairvoyance, and individual perfect knowledge, turned their backs on existence and the gains and honors of desire, and became worthy of being worshiped, remembered, and praised by the gods, including the powerful ones and their attendants. Then, the householder Delightful went to where the Blessed One was. Having arrived, he bowed his head at the feet of the Blessed One and sat down to one side. Having sat down to one side, the Blessed One taught the Dharma to the householder Delightful.
