Always hoping so. He said: If the god, with the intention of examining me, temporarily grants me such a situation, what should I do if he punishes me? If the god is pleased with me, please grant me charity and allow me to do good deeds. The king said: Householder, if that is the case, then please give charity as you wish and do good deeds. Then, the householder Gadangchen had a house built for giving alms, and without appointing a manager for the alms, he said: Wise ones, if there come here ascetics, Brahmins, or others with signs and appearances that have not appeared before, please tell me. Soon, about five hundred sages came from the south, and they went to the central region, and finally they went on the road to the monastery, and when they entered the monastery, the water was exhausted, and they were thirsty because they were without water, and they began to collide with each other on that road to the monastery. As they searched each other, not far away, in the direction of the blue grassland, they saw a tree, and some of them said: Wise ones, there is a tree in the direction of this blue grassland, let's go and see, there may be water there. Others said: Okay, let's do that. They went over, and when they saw that there was no water, they began to pray: Wise ones, this land and this tree, god or dragon or yaksha or garuda or gandharva or human or non-human or mahoraga, whoever lives here, please give water to us five hundred thirsty sages. Soon, a hand adorned with all kinds of ornaments came out of that tree, holding a golden pitcher, and the sages held out their palms and began to drink water. When they tasted it, they found that the water had eight qualities: coolness, sweetness, lightness, softness, clarity, no odor, does not harm the throat when drinking, and does not harm the stomach when drinking. After they were full, they filled the pitcher, said auspicious words, and then rose and left. The thought arose in their minds: Wise ones, we have seen such a wonderful thing, you are...

Indeed. Not asking what karma caused you to be born here is our fault. Thinking, 'Let's go back and ask,' they all gathered, returned, and sat near that tree, saying: 'O tree, are you a god? Are you a dragon? Are you a yaksha? Are you a garuda? Are you a gandharva? Are you a human? What are you? O great-bellied one, who dwells here? Who is it that has made those of us who went to the solitary place, who have suffered harm and fear, who have become uncomfortable, and who are under the control of death, satisfied with water endowed with eight qualities? Please tell us who you are and what karma caused you to be born here.' After a while, a voice came from that tree: 'O wise ones, the people of Jambudvipa are difficult to believe, so if I say who I am and what karma caused me to be born here, you will not believe it. How should I speak?' The ascetics said: 'Alas, if we see it with our own eyes, how could we not believe it? Do not hesitate, speak.' It said: 'O wise ones, if that is so, then listen, and I will tell you who I am and what karma caused me to be born here. In the country of Kosala, there is a city called Shravasti, where there lived a householder named Anathapindada, the giver of food to the helpless. Near his house, I used to do weaving. He often gave food to the helpless, so beggars from different places came one after another and asked me where the house of Anathapindada, the giver of food to the helpless, was. I stretched out my right hand and said to them, "This is the house of Anathapindada, the giver of food to the helpless." They received handfuls of food, bowls full of food, wealth, and gains from there, and then left. I saw these things. Having seen them, I felt great joy, and because of that karma, I was born among the gods of the retinue of the Four Great Kings and dwell in this tree. Therefore, my right hand is very bright, radiant, and luminous. They praised me with auspicious words and left. After a while, they went to another place, and their food and drink were exhausted. They were tormented by hunger and thirst and began to search everywhere. After a while, not far from them, there was a tree.'
