Thus he spoke. He also said: To the mother who toils, What a good son should do, That you have done for me. My mind has turned towards the heavens, Having well extracted me from the evil realms, You, with great effort, have placed me in the heaven of liberation, You have done well in your efforts. Just as a merchant gains profit, I have gained the heavens. To virtuous spiritual friends, To rely on them closely is excellent. Then, the venerable Mahā-Kātyāyana, having established that virtuous girl in the truth, said: Mother, I am leaving. She said: Son, if that is so, please give me a small token, and I will make offerings to it. He gave her a Kharava, and she made it into a stupa, and erected it there, and it became known as the Kharava Stupa, the Kharava Stupa. Even today, when monks prostrate to stupas, they also prostrate there. The venerable Mahā-Kātyāyana, wishing to go to the central country, went to the Sindhu region. Then, the goddess who dwells on the northern road said to the venerable Mahā-Kātyāyana: Noble one, please also give me a small token, and I will make offerings to it. He thought: The Blessed One has taught that one should not carry shoes with buckles in the central country, so I will give this to her. So, he gave her those shoes with buckles, and she allowed it to be a dwelling place and placed it there. Some know it as the Lord of Shoes, and some know it as the Base of Shoes. The venerable Mahā-Kātyāyana gradually arrived at Shravasti, and the monks saw him and said: Venerable one, it is good that you have come! It is good that you have come! How was your journey, was it pleasant? He said: Venerable ones, it was somewhat pleasant, and also somewhat painful. The monks said: How was it pleasant? How was it painful? He said: Having done the deeds of sentient beings, those were the pleasant experiences. King Topknot and the assembly of people dwelling in the city of Sound, they oppressed me with violence.

Moreover, the best of ministers, Heruka and Bhiruka, fled with great effort, which was a continuation of suffering. Some monks with few desires rebuked and said: "That is a patricide! He killed the venerable Utrayana, an Arhat, who was innocent and harmless. This is only his flower, the fruit will appear in the future." The monks arose with doubts and asked the Buddha, the World Honored One, who cuts off all doubts: "Venerable one, what deeds did the venerable Utrayana commit that he was born into a wealthy, rich, and prosperous family? And having renounced in the World Honored One's teachings, having abandoned all defilements, having realized the Arhatship, he was killed by weapons?" The World Honored One said: "Monks, the monk Utrayana himself has done and accumulated the causes for obtaining the results of karma, transformed the circumstances, approached like a light, and appeared without being devoured by demons. Who else will experience separately the deeds done and accumulated by Utrayana himself? Monks, the deeds done and accumulated will not mature in the external realm of earth, nor will they mature in the realm of water, nor will they mature in the realm of fire, nor will they mature in the realm of wind. But thus, the good and bad deeds done and accumulated will mature in the aggregates, realms, and sources of apprehension. Even after hundreds of kalpas, karmas will not be wasted; when the conditions and time are met, they will manifest as fruits for sentient beings. Monks, in the past, in a time when Buddhas did not appear, there were Pratyekabuddhas inferior to the Fully Enlightened Ones, who were compassionate towards the poor, delighted in remote dwellings, and like rhinoceroses, alone became objects of offering in the world, appearing in the world. In a certain rocky mountain, there lived a hunter. Not far from that rocky mountain, there was a lake that served as a refuge for many deer and birds. That hunter, day after day, in order to drive away, harm, and cause suffering to many deer and birds by improper means, carried hunting tools and traps.

I set up many traps. Those hunting tools and traps are useful. At some point, a Pratyekabuddha went on a journey and went to that cliff, promising to spend the night in a divine place. The next morning, he put on his skirt, took his bowl and Dharma robes, and went to that cliff to beg for alms. After begging for alms there, he thought: This divine place is crowded with people during the day, so I might as well eat alms in a quiet place outside the cliff. So he came out of the cliff and said: This is a quiet place! This is a quiet place! Then he went to that lake, put the bowl and water filter aside, washed his two feet, washed his two hands, filtered the water, picked up the fallen leaves and sat down to eat. He washed his two hands, rinsed his mouth, and put the bowl and water filter back in place. He washed his two feet, leaned against a tree, and sat in a meditative posture like a chest-crawling king curling up his body to sleep, and sat quietly. That day, no one caught a single animal. Then the hunter got up early the next morning and went to that lake. He began to check his hunting tools and traps, but he didn't see a single animal, and he thought: My hunting tools and traps are useful, why didn't I catch a single animal there? What is the reason for this? So he began to search around the lake and saw human footprints. He followed the footprints and saw the Pratyekabuddha sitting quietly, and he thought: These renunciates with peaceful minds like to live in such places. If I don't kill them, they will definitely cut off my livelihood. I must kill them in every way. So, with a heart devoid of compassion, abandoning the afterlife, he drew the bow with a poisoned arrow, pulled it to his ear, and shot it at the vital point of the Pratyekabuddha. The great Pratyekabuddha thought: The hunter is afflicted.
