Like the king of men reclining his body in sleep, he sat in a meditative posture with peaceful conduct. The Blessed One said that there are five benefits of much learning: being skilled in aggregates, being skilled in elements, being skilled in sense fields, being skilled in dependent origination, and not relying on others for its teachings and following. Therefore, he began to strive, recognizing the five parts of the wheel of samsara that move and do not move. All aspects of conditioned phenomena are suppressed by the nature of decay, fall, dissipation, and destruction, thereby abandoning all defilements. Therefore, sons of good family, for what reason do they shave their hair and beards, don the robes of a renunciate, and with pure faith, go forth from home to homelessness, pursuing the unsurpassed conduct of purity, accomplishing it in this very life through their own direct realization, and understanding that: my birth is exhausted, the conduct of purity is established, what was to be done is done, there is no other existence beyond this. He becomes an Arhat, free from desire in the three realms, with a mind that is equal to clods and gold, like the sky and the palm of the hand, like sandalwood placed down. He has broken through the shell of ignorance with wisdom, and has obtained wisdom, clairvoyance, and individual perfect knowledge, turning his back on the gains and honors of existence and desire. He has become an object of worship, remembrance, and praise by the gods, including those with power and attendants. Then, the venerable Uttara, having attained Arhatship, upon individually realizing the joy and bliss of liberation, spoke this verse: The monk Uttara, has been freed from knots, bonds, thorns, and likewise freed from obscurations, but is not yet freed from the laws of the king. Having said this, he said to those executioners: Good sirs, what I was to obtain has been obtained, now you should obtain the purpose for which you have come. They said: O god, if the crowned king asks us what the old king said at the time of his death, what should we answer?
