Having rested from the fatigue of the road, he took the jeweled armor and the letter. He went to King Rupahrdaya (gZugs can snying po), touched his feet with both legs, and presented the jeweled armor and the letter, saying: "O god, King Udayana has sent this gift and this letter to you." King Rupahrdaya read the letter and, seeing the jeweled armor, was greatly amazed. He said to the ministers: "Wise ones, summon the jewel appraisers!" They summoned the jewel appraisers, and the king said: "Wise ones, determine the value of this jewel!" The jewel appraisers began to examine each jewel on the jeweled armor, but they found that each jewel was worthless. They said to the king: "O god, each of these jewels is worthless." According to the rule, the value of a jewel that cannot be appraised is set at a billion. King Rupahrdaya counted the jewels and thought: "What gift should I send in return?" He became worried, rested his cheek on his hand, and sat absorbed in thought. Then he said to the ministers: "Wise ones, King Udayana has sent me such a gift, what gift should I send in return?" The Brahmin Summer Ritual, belonging to the great Magadha lineage, said: "O god, in your country there has also appeared a jewel that is far superior to the three worlds, namely, the Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Enlightened Buddha. You should also have a Buddha image painted on cloth and send it as a return gift." The king said: "If that is the case, then let us ask the Blessed One." Then King Rupahrdaya went to where the Blessed One was, and upon arriving, he bowed his head to the Blessed One's feet and sat to one side. Having sat to one side, King Rupahrdaya said this to the Blessed One: "Venerable One, in the city of Ghosavati (sGra sgrogs), there is a king named Udayana, a friend whom I have not seen, who has sent me a jeweled armor with five parts as a gift."

Therefore, if the Blessed One permits, I will also have an image of the Blessed One drawn on cloth and send it to him as a return gift. The Blessed One said: Great King, allow it to be sent. Your gift of mind is good, for King Utrayana will develop faith as soon as he sees it, and will be able to see the truth. King Rupakaya bowed his head to the feet of the Blessed One and departed from the presence of the Blessed One. He summoned all the painters in the country and said: Wise men, please draw an image of the Blessed One on cloth. They said: Please allow us to draw it. When they began to depict the marks of the Blessed One, because the Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, are never satisfied by being looked at, they were unable to depict the marks of the Blessed One and became discouraged, so they went to the king and said: Great King, we have not been able to depict the marks of the Blessed One. If the king were to invite the Blessed One to another palace and offer a parasol, then we might be able to depict the marks of the Blessed One. King Rupakaya invited the Blessed One to another palace, but because the Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, are never satisfied by being looked at, when they saw the image of the Blessed One, they were never satisfied by looking at it. Even so, they were still unable to depict the marks of the Blessed One. The Blessed One said: Great King, the painters are unable to depict the marks of the Tathagata, do not be discouraged, bring the cloth and I will cast a shadow. The king offered the cloth, and the Blessed One cast a shadow there, and said to the painters: Wise men, fill this shadow with various colors. He also said to the king: Great King, after the image is finished, below it draw the refuge, the precepts, and the twelve links of dependent origination in forward and reverse order. 行。当入于佛之教法。如象入于芦苇之舍。当摧毁死主之军。何人若极具正念，于此法与律中行持，断绝生之轮回后，将了结痛苦。应书写如是之语。又应以广阔之地域空间，以极大之恭敬，为使者们陈设身像。若问此为何物，则应说：此乃于三界中最为殊胜之佛陀薄伽梵之身像。若问下方所书为何物，则此乃承诺。此乃学处之基础。此乃世界之生起与止灭。若问上方所书为何物，则应说：此乃应欢喜之事。如是（开）一扇门。国王书写一切，并令人提问，以各种香熏染，妥善包裹后，放入金筒中。又将金筒放入银筒中。又将银筒放入铜筒中。又以各种香熏染之衣物包裹铜筒。置于象背上，以庄严之城市与道路，从城市中取出。致乌仗那国王之书信如是写道：具力欢喜者，吾将此于三界中最为殊胜之礼物寄予汝，汝应于三又二分之一由旬处，庄严城市与道路，并亲自率领四部军队迎接，于广阔之地域空间，以供养与极大之恭敬陈设之。如是，汝将获得巨大之福德。如是书写并寄出。又告诫使者们：汝等应如是如是说。彼等携带身像与书信，前往宣告。彼等逐渐抵达宣告之处，彼等于路途中驻足。

Go. Enter the Buddha's teachings. Like an elephant entering a reed hut. Destroy the army of the Lord of Death. Whoever is extremely mindful, and practices this Dharma and discipline, having completely abandoned the cycle of birth, will put an end to suffering. Such words should be written. Also, for the messengers, in a wide open space, with great respect, the image should be displayed. If they ask, "What is this?" then say, "This is the image of the Buddha, the Bhagavan, who is most excellent in the three realms." If they ask, "What is written below?" then this is the promise. This is the basis of the training. This is the arising and cessation of the world. If they ask, "What is written above?" then say, "This is something to be rejoiced about." Thus (open) a door. The king wrote everything, and had it questioned, perfumed with various fragrances, carefully wrapped, and placed in a golden tube. The golden tube was then placed in a silver tube. The silver tube was then placed in a copper tube. The copper tube was then wrapped in cloths perfumed with various fragrances. It was placed on the back of an elephant and taken out of the city with a beautiful city and road. The letter to King Utrayana was written as follows: "O joyful one with strength, I am sending you this most excellent gift in the three realms, and you should decorate the city and the road for three and a half yojanas, and personally lead an army of four divisions to welcome it, and in a wide open space, offer it and display it with great respect. By doing so, you will gain great merit." Thus it was written and sent. He also instructed the messengers, "You should say this and this." They took the image and the letter and went to proclaim it. They gradually reached the place of proclamation, and they stopped on the way.
