When they came before me, their bodies were like this: for example, like four great heaps of embers burning, fiercely burning, completely fiercely burning, the flames becoming one and consuming. Then, at midnight, the lord of the gods, Indra, came to me and said, 'Householder, it is not proper for you to be imprisoned. Why are you imprisoned?' I said to him, 'Kausika, I am not imprisoned of my own free will, but the king's servants have imprisoned me.' He said to me, 'Why?' I said to him, 'For sixty Karshapanas, because I do not have those possessions, that is why I am imprisoned.' He said to me, 'Householder, for that reason, generate the mind and speak a vow, and your house or water places will be filled with jewels and gold.' I said to him, 'Kausika, make your heart smaller, and the king will act according to the power of faith because of faith. If you wish, stay, and I will teach you the Dharma.' When he came before me to listen to the Dharma, his body was like this: for example, like the previous four great heaps of embers burning, fiercely burning, completely fiercely burning, the flames becoming one and consuming, surpassing that, and more magnificent, a great heap of embers burning, fiercely burning, completely fiercely burning, the flames becoming one and consuming. Then, in the last watch of the night, Brahma, the lord of the Sahā world, came to me and said, 'Householder, it is not proper for you to be imprisoned. Why are you imprisoned?' I said to him, 'Brahma, I am not imprisoned of my own free will, but the king's servants have imprisoned me.' He said to me, 'Why?' I said to him, 'For six Karshapanas.'

The king said, 'Householder, if so, I will also grant you excellent things, say what you want.' He said, 'O God, if you trust me, I wish to read the Buddha's teachings at night by the light of a torch.' The king said, 'Householder, not only are you allowed, but also, relying on you, anyone else who wants to read the Buddha's teachings at night by the light of a torch is also allowed.' Then, the evil householder Good Giving was released by the king, rejoiced greatly, left the king's presence, and went to where the Blessed One was, and upon arriving, bowed his head to the Blessed One's feet and sat down on one side. King Prasenajit of Kosala also went to Jetavana to bow to the feet of the Blessed One. Because the king was of a proud lineage, he sat at the gate of Jetavana and said to an impure person, 'Go and see who is attending to and honoring the Blessed One.' That impure person said, 'As you command.'

Having heard from King Prasenajit, he went to where the Blessed One was. After a while, the wicked householder Bhadra saw that the Blessed One was being revered. Having seen this, he went to where King Prasenajit of Kosala was, and having arrived, he said to King Prasenajit of Kosala: "O god, the wicked householder Bhadra is revering the Blessed One." The king thought: "Since that householder resides in my territory, if he sees me, he should rise to greet me." So he went to where the Blessed One was. The wicked householder Bhadra saw King Prasenajit of Kosala from afar. Having seen him, he said to the Blessed One: "Venerable one, what are you doing? Are you temporarily revering the sacred Dharma, or are you revering the king?" The Blessed One said: "Householder, temporarily revere the sacred Dharma. The Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, all respect the sacred Dharma, and the Arhats also hold the Dharma as supreme." Then the Blessed One spoke the following verses regarding this event: "The Buddhas who have passed, The Buddhas who have not yet come, The Buddhas who dispel sorrow, And all the many who dwell now, All have revered and will revere, The sacred Dharma. Thus they dwell in reverence, This is the nature of the Buddhas. Therefore, wishing well for myself, And desiring to manifest greatness, If one remembers the Buddha's teachings, One should revere the sacred Dharma." The wicked householder Bhadra did not rise to greet King Prasenajit of Kosala, and the king, being angry, thought: "Since this householder resides in my territory, he does not rise to greet me." So, surrounded by anger, he bowed his head at the feet of the Blessed One and sat down to one side. The Blessed One, knowing that he was surrounded by anger, began to speak other words and did not teach the Dharma. He said: "Blessed One, please teach the Dharma. Sugata, please teach the Dharma." Thus he requested, and the Blessed One...
