When you were walking on the road, deliberating, at that time, I was following behind, listening. They said: Are you allowed to eavesdrop? Nanda said: If I were not to eavesdrop when you are deliberating, you would do the deed of expelling me from the dwelling. Why do some monks with few desires quarrel with the monks, expose faults, disagree, and dwell in dispute? I heard what these monks were saying, and thought: I will establish names accordingly, just like them. Therefore, they reproach me for listening without saying a word, accuse me, and insult me. At that time, the monks reported to the Blessed One. Then, the Blessed One, for this event, this origin, this cause, convened the Sangha of monks, and so on, as before. The Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, knowingly commit offenses, and so on, also as before. The Buddha, the Blessed One, rebuked Nanda, the son of the Shakyas: Nanda, you heard the monks quarreling, exposing faults, disagreeing, and dwelling in dispute, and thought: I will establish names accordingly, just like them, therefore, you listened without saying a word, is that true? Venerable One, yes. The Buddha, the Blessed One, rebuked, saying: This is not the conduct of a renunciate, it is not in accordance, it is not appropriate, it is not in accordance with the Dharma, this is not something to be done by one who has gone forth. Then, the Blessed One, having rebuked in various ways, addressed the monks: Monks, therefore, seeing ten benefits, the foundation of training should be established for the hearers in the Vinaya, and so on, as before. My hearers should train in the Vinaya.
