laid the foundation for learning. Kashyapa began to dissuade, and they said: Whoever dissuades shall also be expelled from the Sangha. Kashyapa thought: According to their actions, I too will be expelled from the Sangha, which would not be good. It was winter, so he put on a woolen cloak, leaned the cloak against the wall, and left his seat without saying a word. They said: Venerable elders, please state your wishes. They hastily expelled Nanda from the Sangha. After he was expelled from the Sangha, he went crying to his brother. Kashyapa said: Nanda, why are you crying? Those black-bowled monks have expelled me from the Sangha. Kashyapa said: Whoever has expelled my brother from the Sangha, may they be expelled from villages, cities, and the three realms! However, do those expelled from the Sangha not have villages and cities? Stay, and later I will ask for forgiveness. Thus, they only did disharmonious things. Who did not come here? Kashyapa said: I did. I heard the teacher's voice on the other side of the elder over there. Kashyapa said: When they said that whoever dissuades shall also be expelled from the Sangha, I thought: According to their actions, I too will be expelled from the Sangha, which would not be good. It was winter, so I put on a woolen cloak, leaned the cloak against the wall, and left my seat without saying a word. Those monks of few desires rebuked, saying: Why do monks get up and leave their seats without saying a word when discussing matters related to the Dharma of the Sangha? They slandered, ridiculed, and reviled. At that time, the monks reported this matter to the Blessed One. Then, regarding this event, this origin, and this occasion, the Blessed One convened the Sangha of monks, and so on, as before. The Buddhas, the Blessed Ones.

Just like "the land is knowingly cultivated," and so on, it is the same as before. The Buddha, the Bhagavan, rebuked Ananda, the son of the Shakya clan, saying: Ananda, is it true that when the Sangha has a discussion about the Dharma that is being settled, you get up from your seat and leave without saying anything? Venerable one, yes. The Buddha, the Bhagavan, rebuked him, saying: This is not the conduct of a Shramana, it is not in accordance, it is not appropriate, it is not in accordance with the rules, this is not something that a renunciate should do. Then, after the Bhagavan rebuked him in various ways, he said to the monks: Monks, therefore, you should truly see the ten benefits, and thus establish the basis of learning for the Shravakas in the Vinaya. And so on, as before. My Shravakas should recite the basis of learning in the Vinaya in this way: If any monk, when the Sangha has a discussion about the Dharma that is being settled, gets up from his seat and leaves without saying anything, he commits a Patayantika offense. The Bhagavan thus established the basis of learning for the Shravakas in the Vinaya. When those monks with severe illnesses are unable to sit for long, the monks who care for the sick also neglect the affairs of the sick. The monks who are in charge of distributing food also neglect the affairs of the Sangha. At that time, the monks reported to the Bhagavan. The Bhagavan instructed: Therefore, a monk should inform the (other) sitting monks before leaving. After the Bhagavan instructed, "a monk should inform the (other) sitting monks before leaving," a certain monk left his bowl and robes in another house, and soon there was a fire there. That monk started to go there, and when he was halfway there, he had the thought: I did not inform the (other) sitting monks before leaving. Then he returned, and only went after he had informed the (other) sitting monks. As a result, his bowl and robes were burned. When he arrived there, the householder said: Venerable one, why are you late? Therefore, your bowl and robes have been burned. If you had come sooner, your bowl and robes would have...

Saying, "The clothes will not be damaged," when that bhikshu became impoverished, the bhikshus reported to the Blessed One. The Blessed One instructed, "Therefore, except for such a circumstance." After that, the Blessed One praised the desire to learn, respect for learning, and not being stingy with the requisites for learning, and gave the bhikshus Dharma talks that were in accordance with this, mostly about it, and in harmony with it, and then instructed the bhikshus, "Bhikkhus, therefore, the former is the enactment, and this is the permission. My shravaka disciples should recite the basis of learning the Vinaya in this way: If any bhikshu, when a Dharma-related debate arises in the Sangha, gets up from his seat and leaves without saying a word, and does not speak to the bhikshu sitting there, except for such a circumstance, it is a patayantika." "Again, bhikshu" means the son of the Shakya, Gautama, or anyone else like that. "Of the Sangha" means of the Sangha of the Tathagata's shravaka disciples. "When a Dharma-related debate arises" means when a request, and a request twice, and a request four times action arises. "Gets up from his seat and leaves without saying a word" means going beyond the range of hearing. "Does not speak to the bhikshu sitting there" means not speaking to the bhikshu who is sitting there at that time. "Except for such a circumstance" means setting aside such a circumstance. "It is a patayantika" means it burns, cooks, and causes one to fall into sentient being hell, animals, hungry ghosts, bad destinies, evil paths, and wrong views. Furthermore, as long as that patayantika has not been confessed and individually confessed, it obscures virtuous dharmas, therefore it is said to be a patayantika. So, how does one become a patayantika? As long as a bhikshu, when a Dharma-related debate arises in the Sangha, gets up from his seat and leaves without saying a word, and does not speak to the bhikshu sitting there, as long as he has not exceeded the range of hearing, he commits a dukkrta, and once he exceeds the range of hearing, he commits a patayantika.
