The eighth section, concerning the category of many guests, thieves, etc. The eighth section, concerning the category of many guests, thieves, etc. Vinaya-vibhaṅga, sixty-third fascicle. The Buddha, the Bhagavan, was dwelling at Sravasti in the Jeta Grove, Anathapindika's Garden. At that time, the group of six monks were digging the ground with their own hands, having others dig, carrying soil on their shoulders, having others carry it, drawing irrigation ditches, and having others draw them. Other non-Buddhists and knowledgeable people ridiculed them, saying: "These Shakyaputra ascetics are digging the ground with their own hands, having others dig, carrying soil on their shoulders, having others carry it, drawing irrigation ditches, and having others draw them. Brahmins and householders also dig the ground with their own hands, have others dig, carry soil on their shoulders, have others carry it, draw irrigation ditches, and have others draw them. What is the difference between these knowledgeable Shakyaputra ascetics and the Brahmins and householders? What is the thought? What is the difference in action? Who would think of giving alms to these shaven-headed ascetics?" They reviled, mocked, and spoke abusively. At that time, the monks reported this matter to the Bhagavan. Then, because of this event, this origin, and this occasion, the Bhagavan convened the Sangha of monks, etc., as before. The Buddhas, the Bhagavatans, knowingly cultivate, etc., also as before. The Buddha, the Bhagavan, rebuked the group of six monks: "Monks, is it true that you are digging the ground with your own hands, having others dig, carrying soil on your shoulders, having others carry it, drawing irrigation ditches, and having others draw them?" "Venerable One, it is true." The Buddha, the Bhagavan, rebuked them, saying: "This is not the conduct of an ascetic, it is not in accordance, it is not appropriate, it is not in accordance with the rules, this is not something that a renunciant should do." Then, after rebuking them in various ways, the Bhagavan addressed the monks: "Monks,

Therefore, having properly observed the ten benefits, the training ground for the Shravakas in the Vinaya should be established, and so on, as before. My Shravakas should recite and study the training ground of the Vinaya as follows: Furthermore, if any Bhikshu digs the earth with his own hand, or causes others to dig, he commits a Patayantika offense. Furthermore, the term "whoever" refers to the group of six Bhikshus, or others like them. "With his own hand" means from hand to hand. "Earth" refers to two kinds of earth: natural earth and non-natural earth. "Natural earth" refers to earth that becomes sticky after being soaked by rain for three months. If it is not soaked by rain, it becomes sticky after six months. "Non-natural earth" refers to anything other than that. "Digging" means by oneself. "Causing to dig" means by others. "Patayantika offense" means burning, tormenting, and causing to fall into the hells, animals, pretas, evil destinies, bad migrations, and places of falling. Furthermore, as long as that Patayantika offense is not confessed and individually confessed, it obstructs all virtuous dharmas, therefore it is said to be a Patayantika offense. If so, how does it become a Patayantika offense? If a Bhikshu digs the earth, if he digs natural earth, it becomes a Patayantika offense; if he digs non-natural earth, it becomes a Dushkrita offense. If a Bhikshu blocks an earth mound, if he blocks a hard one, it becomes a Patayantika offense; if he blocks a loose one, it becomes a Dushkrita offense. If a Bhikshu drives a stake into the ground, it becomes a Patayantika offense; if he pulls a stake out of the ground, it becomes a Dushkrita offense. If a Bhikshu draws a line on the ground, it becomes a Dushkrita offense. There is no offense for the intention of laughing and joking. If a Bhikshu blocks a heavy object attached to the earth, it becomes a Dushkrita offense; if he blocks only the heavy object, there is no offense. If a Bhikshu causes a bank to collapse, if he causes a hard one to collapse, it becomes a Patayantika offense; if he causes a loose one to collapse, it becomes a Dushkrita offense. If a Bhikshu stirs up mud, it becomes a Dushkrita offense. If a Bhikshu lifts a bamboo pole, a pot, or a clod of earth connected to the mud, it becomes a Dushkrita offense. If a Bhikshu destroys a wall, if he destroys a hard one, it becomes a Patayantika offense; if he destroys a loose one,
