Having listened, he went to the rainy season dwelling of the bhikkhunis. After some time, the group of six bhikkhus saw him and asked him: Venerable Lampa, where are you going? Venerable Lampa thought: These people seem not to have heard, I should tell them as well. So he said: Venerable ones, the Blessed One has established this common ground of training for the disciples in the discipline: A bhikkhu may accept an invitation for four months. If he accepts more than that, it is a downfall. Except for individual invitations, repeated invitations, timely invitations, and constant invitations, because that is the time. The Blessed One has established this rule, and you should also train in this training. They said: Until we ask the bhikkhunis who hold the sutras, hold the vinaya, and hold the matrika, we, who are childish, foolish, unclear, and unskilled, will not train in this training according to your words. They reproached him with the words childish, foolish, unclear, and unskilled. Venerable Lampa then left and, as he was walking, he was seen by the group of twelve bhikkhunis, and they said to him: Venerable Lampa, where are you going? He said: Sisters, know that the Blessed One has established this common ground of training for the disciples in the discipline: A bhikkhu may accept an invitation for four months.

What's the point of saying anything? Now go, thinking that you shouldn't say it to anyone else except the great mother of beings, Gautami. Then he went to the great mother of beings, Gautami, and after arriving, he said these words to the great mother of beings, Gautami: Gautami, know this! The Blessed One, in terms of discipline, has established this common basis of training for the hearers: a monk should accept an invitation for four months. If he accepts an invitation beyond that, it is a downfall. Except for separate invitations, repeated invitations, timely invitations, and permanent invitations. Because that is the time. He has established this rule, and you should train in this training. If he accepts an invitation beyond that, it is a downfall. Except for separate invitations, repeated invitations, timely invitations, and permanent invitations. Because that is the time. Whatever rule has been established, I accept it with my head, mouth, and mind. Venerable Lampa, it is like this, for example, whether it is a cow of the Kshatriya caste, or a cow of the Brahmin caste, or a cow of the Vaishya caste, or a cow of the Shudra caste, all well-bathed, well-anointed, well-groomed with hair and nails, people wearing white clothes, if they offer a garland of blue lotuses, or a garland of champaka flowers, or a garland of varshika flowers, or a garland of atimuktaka flowers, then he will gladly take it with both hands and place it on the most honorable part of his body—his head, just like that. Venerable Lampa, the Blessed One, in terms of discipline, has established this basis of training for the hearers: a monk should accept an invitation for four months. If he accepts an invitation beyond that, it is a downfall. Except for separate invitations, repeated invitations, timely invitations, and permanent invitations. Because that is the time.

Except when called upon, one should not say, "Now is the time." Whatever rules you have established, I accept them with my head, mouth, and mind. The venerable Lampa was sent back with instructions, and the venerable Kunga saw him and asked: "Venerable Lampa, are you instructing the nuns?" He replied, "Yes, I am instructing. Like this, those who are called children, foolish, unclear, and unwise raise objections." Who? The group of six monks. Why? Because they narrated the situation in detail. Some monks thought: Why should the monks instruct, saying, 'You should study this precept'? They would say this: 'Before we ask the monks who uphold the sutras, uphold the Vinaya, and uphold the Matrikas, we, who are children, foolish, unclear, and unwise, will not study this precept according to your words.' They would scold, slander, and speak abusively. The monks reported that situation to the Blessed One. Then, because of this event, this origin, and this situation, the Blessed One convened the Sangha of monks, and so on, as before. The Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, knowingly committed offenses, and so on, as before. The Buddha, the Blessed One, rebuked the group of six monks: "Monks, when the monks instruct, saying, 'You should study this precept,' they say this: 'Before we ask the monks who uphold the sutras, uphold the Vinaya, and uphold the Matrikas, we, who are children, foolish, unclear, and unwise, will not study this precept according to your words.' Is this true?" Venerable ones, yes. The Buddha, the Blessed One, rebuked them, saying: "This is not the conduct of a Shramana, it is not in accordance, it is not appropriate, it is not in accordance with the rules, this is not something that a renunciate should do." Then, after rebuking them in various ways, the Blessed One said to the monks: "Monks, therefore, having properly seen the ten benefits, it is the basis for the training of the Shravakas in the Vinaya."
