The Sangha of monks was often invited to other people's homes during the rainy season for meals. But sometimes they were not invited with all the necessary items. I thought, I will invite the Blessed One and the Sangha of monks with all the necessary items for four months. Then, King Bimbisara of Magadha, went to where the Blessed One was. Having arrived, he bowed his head at the feet of the Blessed One and sat down to one side. Having sat down to one side, the Blessed One taught King Bimbisara of Magadha with a Dharma-related discourse, causing him to understand, accept, rejoice, and be greatly delighted. In many ways, he taught with a Dharma-related discourse, causing him to understand, accept, rejoice, and be greatly delighted, and then he remained silent. Then, King Bimbisara of Magadha rose from his seat, folded his palms towards the Blessed One, and said to the Blessed One: "Blessed One, if it is permitted, may the Sangha of monks accept my robes, alms, dwellings, medicines for illness, and medicinal supplies for four months of the rainy season?" The Blessed One did not speak to King Bimbisara of Magadha, indicating his consent. Then, King Bimbisara of Magadha, knowing that the Blessed One had consented by remaining silent, bowed his head at the feet of the Blessed One, departed from the presence of the Blessed One, and then had houses built suitable for the sick to live in, and also had medicines for illness stored there. He stored medicines of comfort suitable for use at different times, medicines of comfort suitable for use at different hours, medicines that could be kept for seven days, medicines that could be kept for a lifetime, as well as root medicines, stem medicines, leaf medicines, flower medicines, and fruit medicines. He also stored clarified butter that had been rendered and unrendered, sesame oil that had been rendered and unrendered, as well as cows, female buffaloes, and goats.

Also let go. Let go of all the equipment as well. Doctors and attendants should also be let go. The husband of the sister of the Venerable Pilindavatsa heard that the Blessed One was traveling and passing away among the Shakyas, so he went to Rajagriha (Rajgir, a city in present-day Bihar) and stayed in the Kalanda place in the Light Garden in Rajagriha. After hearing this, he thought to himself: Shakya the Great invited the Blessed One and the Sangha of Bhikshus for four months with all the equipment. I have also invited the Blessed One and the Sangha of Bhikshus to other people's homes for meals many times at the right time, but I have never invited them with all the equipment. I think I should invite the Blessed One and the Sangha of Bhikshus for four months with all the equipment. Then, that Brahmin went to where the Blessed One was, and after arriving, he bowed to the Blessed One's feet with his head, and then sat aside. After sitting aside, the Blessed One taught that Brahmin with Dharma-related teachings, made him truly understand, made him truly uplifted, and made him truly happy. In many ways, with Dharma-related teachings, he truly taught, made him truly understand, truly uplifted, and truly rejoiced, and then he stopped speaking. Then, that Brahmin stood up from his seat, folded his palms towards where the Blessed One was, and said to the Blessed One: Blessed One, if the Blessed One and the Sangha of Bhikshus would be kind enough to allow it, please accept my offering of clothes, food, lodging, medicine, and medical equipment for four months. That Brahmin was first invited by King Bimbisara of Magadha. That Brahmin thought: Venerable Pilindavatsa is my relative, if I invite him, he should allow it. So, he went to where the Venerable Pilindavatsa was, and after arriving, he bowed to the Venerable Pilindavatsa's feet with his head, and then sat aside. After sitting aside, the Venerable Pilindavatsa spoke to that Brahmin about the Dharma.

With such words, he truly reveals, truly causes to believe, truly praises, and truly causes to rejoice. In various ways, with words corresponding to the Dharma, he truly reveals, truly causes to believe, truly praises, and truly causes to rejoice, and then remains silent. Then, that Brahmin arose from his seat, paid homage to the venerable Pilindavatsa by joining his palms together, and said to the venerable Pilindavatsa: "Venerable one, would you allow me to offer you robes, alms food, lodging, and medicine for four months?" The venerable Pilindavatsa said: "Please inform the Blessed One." Then, the venerable Pilindavatsa went to where the Blessed One was, and after arriving, he bowed his head at the feet of the Blessed One, and said to the Blessed One: "Venerable one, my relative came to me and said to me: 'Venerable one, would you allow me to offer you robes, alms food, lodging, and medicine for four months?' How should I answer him?" The Blessed One instructed: "Therefore, except for individual invitations, a Bhikshu may accept individual invitations." Other Bhikshus who arrived later thought: "We have not been invited by the king, we should go for alms." Understanding this, they went for alms. The king who appeared in Magadha, skilled in crafts and with a dignified appearance, was residing on the foundation of the palace above the essence. He saw those Bhikshus going for alms and said to the ministers: "Wise ones, why are these venerable ones going for alms?" They said: "Deity, these are the ones who came later. They think in their hearts: 'Those Bhikshus who came together with the Blessed One have been invited by the king, but we who came later have not been invited by the king, so we are going for alms.'" The king said: "If that is the case, then the venerable ones should be invited again and again." When they said this, the Bhikshus reported the matter to the Blessed One.
