And, I take refuge in the Sangha of monks. Please accept me as a layperson. From now until the end of my life, I take refuge with great joy from the depths of my heart. Then, that Brahmin said: Venerable Charka, did you come to my gathering? I did. What did Venerable Charka say to my Brahmin woman? The venerable Charka said: I said to her: Sister, the old is exhausted, and the new does not increase even slightly. Seeing the unrestrained adornment, she weeps with a face filled with tears. That's what I said. Venerable, what is the meaning of that verse? Brahmin, in a past life, a festival was held on a cliff, and many householders' wives, adorned with their own ornaments, went to the pleasure garden, and a city beggar woman saw them, and she grieved for her own decline. When Buddhas do not appear, inferior Pratyekabuddhas, and those who are compassionate to the poor, who enjoy remote dwellings, who are like rhinoceroses, alone become the objects of offering in the world, appear in the world. A Pratyekabuddha went in that direction to benefit her, and that city beggar woman saw that his body was beautiful and his mind was beautiful, and she found some begged food, and she thought: I have not made offerings to such a field of merit, so I have become like this. If this Blessed One would accept a little alms from me, I would offer it to him. That Pratyekabuddha held out his bowl out of compassion for her, and she offered it to him. That Pratyekabuddha, out of compassion for her, like the king of swans spreading his wings, manifested in the sky above, and then began to perform miracles of burning, illuminating, raining, and lightning. Because ordinary people easily turn their minds to miracles, she fell at the feet of that Pratyekabuddha like a tree cut from its roots, and then prayed, saying: May I never suffer because of this result. Brahmin at that time.

At that time, that prostitute was your wife. Because the karma of her offering to the Pratyekabuddha had ripened, she was born like this now. Thinking that her karma had ripened, I said these words: The old sister is exhausted, / The new does not increase at all. / Seeing the wanton adornment, / Crying with a tearful face. So he said. The venerable Carka was actually urging my attendant. Venerable Carka, would you please accept my invitation to offer alms at my humble abode tomorrow? The venerable Carka accepted without saying anything to the Brahmin. Then, that Brahmin knew that the venerable Carka had accepted without saying anything, and left. That Brahmin woman also felt regret and thought: I sent the Brahmin to kill Carka, it was not good, that Brahmin did not kill the venerable Carka, did he? When the Brahmin came back, the wife said: Son of the king, did you not kill the venerable Carka? The Brahmin said: He is a great virtuous one, who can kill him? The wife said: Then you did not invite him? The Brahmin said: I will invite him to another house for alms tomorrow, you prepare the food! That Brahmin woman prepared all the cold food on that day, and all the hot food on the next day. The venerable Carka also put on his skirt early in the morning on the next day, took his robes and bowl, and went to the house of that Brahmin. After arriving, He sat on the prepared seat. Then, that Brahmin and his wife saw that the venerable Carka was sitting comfortably, and they personally fed him with clean and delicious food from their own hands to satisfy him and make him strong. After personally feeding him and offering him many kinds of clean and delicious food from their own hands, the venerable Carka finished eating, washed his hands, and put down his bowl. Seeing this, he took a very low seat and sat in front of the venerable Carka to listen to the Dharma. The venerable Carka understood the thoughts, habits, nature, and essence of that Brahmin woman, and then...
