The venerable Charka, in Shravasti, tamed and settled seven Brahmin families. The venerable Charka thought, 'When is the time to tame?' In Shravasti, there lived a Brahmin whose wife was beautiful, pleasing to look at, and lovely. When the Brahmin went outside for flowers and firewood, the venerable Charka thought, 'Now is the time to tame this Brahmin.' So he went to the Brahmin's house. The Brahmin woman, arrogant with the pride of her appearance, the pride of her youth, the pride of her lineage, and the pride of her wealth, did not even offer a word. The venerable Charka, thinking that her past deeds were exhausted, spoke a verse: 'Sister, the old is being exhausted, / And the new is not being increased even a little. / Seeing the wanton adornment, / She weeps with a face filled with tears.' Having said this, he left. The Brahmin woman, scolding, said, 'This one has insulted me!' She put on dirty clothes and lay down on a broken bed. When the Brahmin came, he saw her and said, 'Brahmin woman, what is wrong?' The Brahmin woman scolded and said, 'If you do not have the wealth to give food and clothing to even one person standing at the door, why did you take a wife? The ascetic Charka has insulted me.' The Brahmin said, 'Good woman, he is the son of a Brahmin leader who has gone forth, please be tolerant of him.' The Brahmin woman said, 'If he lives, I will not live.' The Brahmin said, 'Good woman, he is a close friend of King Prasenajit of Kosala, and the teacher of Queen Mallika. They have obtained from the king the complete abandonment of youth. If I were to cause him even a little suffering, we would be put to death by the king being put in his palm, and we would be in such a situation, please be tolerant.' The Brahmin woman said, 'Brahmin, what is the use of saying so much? If he lives, I will not live.' Since there is nothing that one would not do out of desire, the Brahmin stood up with a sword tucked into his side. The venerable Charka saw him from afar.

Then, wondering what kind of mind it would come with, seeing that it was coming with the intention to kill, the Venerable Cārka manifested a hut not made of leaves, entered it, and stayed there. The Brahmin said: "Venerable Cārka, open the door!" The Venerable Cārka said: "If you have come with a good intention, why shouldn't I open the door? Put down the sword!" The Brahmin thought: "He intends to stop me and kill me," so he put down the sword. The Venerable Cārka said: "Put down that sinful mind as well!" The Brahmin thought: "This is a great being, he even knows my mind," and he developed great faith. The Venerable Cārka withdrew the manifested miracle and remained as he was. The Brahmin bowed to the two feet of the Venerable Cārka and sat before him to listen to the Dharma. The Venerable Cārka understood his thoughts, habits, inclinations, and nature. Thus, as the Brahmin sat on that very seat, he shattered the twenty high peaks of the mountain of the view of the perishable aggregate with the vajra of wisdom, and realized the fruit of stream-entry. Thus he taught the Dharma. Having seen the truth, he said: "Venerable, I have relied on the virtuous friend, the Venerable Cārka. What the Venerable Cārka has done for me, my father has not done for me, my mother has not done for me, the king has not done for me, the gods have not done for me, my ancestors have not done for me, the ascetics and Brahmins have not done for me, the loving ones, friends, and relatives have not done for me. The ocean of blood and tears has been dried up, I have been delivered from the mountain of bones, the gates of the lower realms have been closed, the gates to heaven and liberation have been opened, beings have been pulled out of hell, animals, and hungry ghosts, and placed among gods and humans. Samsara has been ended. The twenty high peaks of the mountain of the view of the perishable aggregate, accumulated since beginningless time, have been shattered by the vajra of wisdom, and I have attained the fruit of stream-entry. Venerable, I have entered, Venerable, I have entered. Venerable, I take refuge in the Blessed One and the Dharma."
