(He) invited the Buddha and the Bhikkhu Sangha to the Khenpo's place for a meal tomorrow. The Brahmin said, "Why do you do that?" He said, "Khenpo, if you don't trust me, please send a Brahmin boy to observe." He sent a Brahmin boy to observe, and when the venerable Charga invited the Buddha and the Bhikkhu Sangha, (that boy) sat next to the elder and heard that a certain Brahmin was inviting the Buddha and the Bhikkhu Sangha to another house for a meal. The Brahmin boy heard this and came back and said to the Brahmin, "Khenpo, it is indeed so, the venerable Charga, in the name of Khenpo, has invited the Buddha and the Bhikkhu Sangha to the Khenpo's place for a meal tomorrow, please prepare the food." He said, "Have I not seen Brahmins proficient in the three Vedas? Why give alms to those shaven-headed ascetics? They will eat at the house of the householder Anathapindika." When he got up the next morning, the Bhikkhu in charge of the water came to the Brahmin's house and said, "Brahmin, where should the water be placed?" The Brahmin said, "At the householder Anathapindika's place." Similarly, the Bhikkhu in charge of the food came and said, "Brahmin, where should the food be placed?" The Brahmin said, "At the householder Anathapindika's place." The Blessed One said, "Those who are invited should go early and prepare what is not prepared." The venerable Charga got up early the next morning and went, and the householder Anathapindika saw him on the road and said, "Venerable Charga, where are you going?" He said, "A Brahmin is relying on me and has invited the Buddha and the Bhikkhu Sangha to another house for a meal, so I am going there." The householder said, "That Brahmin does not believe in the Buddha, it would be bad if he interrupted the meal of the Buddha and the Bhikkhu Sangha, I will go too."

After the two of them arrived there, after a while, that Brahmin became smaller than a heart. Then, the householder Anathapindika said to him: Brahmin, you have invited the Buddha and the Sangha of monks to other people's houses for alms, why are you still smaller than a heart? What's wrong with preparing food? That Brahmin said: Haven't I seen Brahmins with the three Vedas? But give alms to those bald-headed Shramanas. You eat coarse grains in my house! The householder said: Brahmin, do you think I have no property? I am willing to respectfully serve the Buddha and the Sangha of monks, even for the rest of my life, with alms, clothes, dwellings, the causes of diseases, and medical supplies. However, I said these words to help you. Don't become smaller than a heart, prepare food quickly! In this way, the Buddha and the Sangha of monks were respected, revered, regarded as teachers, regarded as examples, and offered by King Pasenadi of Kosala, Queen Mallika, Princess Sumana, the wise sage Datta, the old man, and me, as well as other great Brahmins and householders. If the alms of the Buddha and the Sangha of monks are interrupted because of you, the king will surely harm you like a cannibal, and you will also be in danger of being buried alive and dying. That Brahmin was afraid and thought: Will it really be like that? So he said: Householder, if I don't prepare food, what should I do? The householder said: Brahmin, in Shravasti (舍卫城) there is nothing that cannot be bought with money. Bring the Kapashanas, and I will prepare the food. The Brahmin said: Householder, how many Kapashanas are needed to satisfy the alms of the Buddha and the Sangha of monks? The householder said: Five hundred Kapashanas are enough. That Brahmin gave the householder five hundred Kapashanas, and the householder Anathapindika added other Kapashanas on top of those.

also added and prepared the food. That Brahmin said, 'Householder, I don't even have utensils.' The householder, the protector of the food offering, said, 'Brahmin, don't worry about the utensils, just sit down a little smaller, and they will leave with the vessels of the hermits.' Then, the Sangha of monks, headed by the Buddha, arrived and sat down. The Brahmin saw the monks cleaning their bowls, and he thought, 'For a while, I don't need to clean the vessels either.' So he became very devoted and said to the venerable Charga, 'Venerable Charga, you are my virtuous friend. Please distribute the food and then eat.' After offering food to the Sangha of monks, headed by the Buddha, the Blessed One gave a thanksgiving speech, then rose from his seat and departed. Then that Brahmin said, 'Venerable Charga, now you sit down and do the work of eating.' As he sat down, the Brahmin distributed the food, and as he did the work of eating, that Brahmin and his wife sat in front of the venerable Charga to listen to the Dharma. The venerable Charga understood his thoughts, habits, nature, and essence, and thus, that Brahmin and his wife, while sitting on the same seat, destroyed the twenty high peaks of the mountain of the view of the perishable aggregate with the vajra of wisdom, and manifested the fruit of stream-entry, thus he taught the Dharma. Having seen the truth, he said, 'Venerable, I rely on the virtuous friend, the venerable Charga. What the venerable Charga has done for me, even my father has not done for me, nor my mother, nor the king, nor the gods, nor my ancestors, nor the ascetics and Brahmins, nor the loving ones, friends, and relatives. The ocean of blood and tears has been dried up, I have been liberated from the mountain of bones, the gates of the lower realms have been closed, the gates of heaven and liberation have been opened, beings have been pulled out from hell, animals, and hungry ghosts, and placed among gods and humans, the cycle of existence.'
