said. The god-self has not committed any sinful deeds against him. The king said to the ministers: Wise ones, how should this matter be judged? The ministers said: O God, the Blessed One has shown you to be the best of the courageous ones, so please, O God, make the judgment yourself. The king said: Wise ones, how should this be known? The eye-consciousness sees forms, but the attendants of the queen can discern the maiden. Send that maiden into the midst of the queen's attendants and let her discern. They sent that maiden into the midst of the queen's attendants, and the queen Garland Woman held that maiden in her lap and said: Daughter, speak the truth! If the monk Carka has separated you from your maidenhood, even though he is the son of a Brahmin priest who has renounced the world, you will fall into the ashes of your family's hearth. But if you lie and say that he is virtuous, then by slandering a monk who is not truthful, you will go to the great burning hell. That maiden said: O Queen, I did not let him separate me from my maidenhood, but he kissed me and smelled my limbs and joints, he smelled everywhere. The queen Garland Woman said: Daughter, for such a small matter you have disturbed the king and the entire court. Do fathers also kiss their daughters and smell their limbs and joints? Do they smell everywhere? Then the old women examined the maiden to see if she had lost her virginity. They said to the king: O God, this maiden is still a virgin. The king said to the ministers: Wise ones, who is guilty in this matter? The ministers said: O God, the monk Carka is guilty. The king said: Wise ones, today put this Brahmin in a grass hut and burn him with fire! Tie that maiden's feet to the legs of a wild donkey! Cut off the hands and feet of those five hundred Brahmin boys! The venerable Carka said: O God, if because of me so many beings are executed, in reality you are expelling me from the teachings of the Blessed One. The king said:

Wise ones, then today release those five hundred Brahmin children. Put this Brahmin in a reed house and burn him with fire. Hang that girl on the two legs of a wild donkey. The Venerable Acarya said: Gods, if even a few small ants are harmed because of me, then in fact the gods have expelled me from the teachings of the Blessed One. The king said to the ministers: Wise ones, look at the power of discernment of the Blessed One's disciples, even though they have not abandoned desire. If the Brahmins are able to overcome the monk Acarya, then he could be killed even with a single stone. Wise ones, take everyone away today. Having dismissed them, they departed. The drums were beaten and separated by curtains, and the great assembly of ordinary people dispersed. When the king, Queen Phrengdenma, and the Venerable Acarya were sitting together, the king said to Queen Phrengdenma: Phrengdenma, look at what kind of merit the monk Acarya has done, that he has disturbed the entire retinue including the king. Queen Phrengdenma said to the Venerable Acarya: Monk Acarya, you, and the nuns who will be ordained later, such as the nun Utpalavarna, the nun Skuljye, the nun Tsirika, and many others, have all abandoned all afflictions and manifested the state of Arhat. Even though you have done such an unseemly thing in the midst of the retinue including the king, are you still not ashamed? The Venerable Acarya said: Phrengdenma, from now on, when wandering in samsara, I will act in such a way that I will not universally practice those afflictions, and having said that, he rose from his seat and left. Unable to meet the Blessed One because of shame, he went to the Venerable Shariputra, and having arrived there, he said this to the Venerable Shariputra: Abbot, how can I, when wandering in samsara, not universally practice those afflictions in that way, please teach me the Dharma. The Venerable Shariputra thought: Has there not occurred a downfall without remainder? When he saw that there was a remainder, he said to him.

Those transgressions that should be confessed, he also made him confess. Those transgressions that should be restrained, he also made him restrain. Then, he gave him instructions, saying, "Remember like this and like this, and practice with diligence." Then, the venerable Charka, alone, in seclusion, diligent, and abiding in self-abandonment, for what reason do sons of good families shave their hair and beards, don the saffron robes, and out of faith in the truth alone, go forth from home to homelessness? They attain the unsurpassed limit of the pure conduct, realize it directly with their own knowledge in this very life, and understand, "Birth is exhausted, the pure conduct has been practiced, what needed to be done has been done, there is no more coming into existence." He became an Arhat, free from desire from the three realms, regarding clods of dirt and gold as equal, possessing a mind equal to the sky and the palm of his hand, like placing sandalwood, he broke the shell of ignorance with wisdom, attained wisdom and direct knowledge, and individual perfect knowledge, turned his back on worldly and desirous gains and respect, and became an object to be offered to, to be remembered, and to be praised by the gods, including those with power and attendants. Then, the venerable Charka, having attained the state of an Arhat and experiencing the joy and happiness of liberation, thought to himself: "The Blessed One has benefited me, the Sugata has done good to me. In this way, the Blessed One has eliminated many of my suffering dharmas, the Blessed One has accomplished many of my happiness dharmas, the Blessed One has eliminated many of my sinful and unwholesome dharmas, the Blessed One has accomplished many of my virtuous dharmas. What should I do to repay, draw near to, and be extremely close to the Blessed One?" Then, he thought again: "The Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, through hundreds of thousands of countless austerities, have perfected the six paramitas over three countless eons and have realized unsurpassed wisdom."
