He was knocked to the ground by the force of intoxication. The Buddhas, the Bhagavat, are of the nature of not forgetting, so the Bhagavat conjured up a non-leafy shelter there and covered him. Then the householder Anathapindika, the giver of food, knowing that the Buddha and the Sangha of monks were dwelling in comfort, satisfied them and strengthened them with clean and blessed food from his own hands. In many ways, having satisfied and offered clean and blessed food from his own hands, knowing that the Bhagavat had folded his umbrella, washed his hands, and put down his bowl, he took a very low seat and sat down in front of the Bhagavat to listen to the Dharma. Then the Bhagavat taught the householder Anathapindika with a Dharma-related discourse, causing him to understand correctly, causing him to grasp correctly, causing him to praise correctly, and causing him to rejoice correctly. In many ways, having taught correctly with a Dharma-related discourse, causing him to grasp correctly, causing him to praise correctly, and causing him to rejoice correctly, he made a dedication of merit, rose from his seat, departed, and went in that direction. Then the Bhagavat subdued that one who manifested miracles and said to the monks: Monks, this is the monk Well-Come who subdued the Naga mango tree riverside. Monks, what do you think? Is this monk Well-Come now able to subdue even a small snake? Venerable, no. Monks, since that is the case, this fault and other faults also arise from drinking intoxicating substances, therefore, monks, those who claim to be my teachers should not drink or feed others even an intoxicating substance on the tip of a blade of grass. Then the Bhagavat awakened the venerable Well-Come and said: Well-Come, why did you become like this? Bhagavat, I did not intend to. Sugata, I did not intend to. Then the Bhagavat went to the Jetavana and, having arrived, sat down on the seat that had been prepared in front of the Sangha of monks. Having sat down, the Bhagavat said to the monks: Monks, thus it is

Therefore, having truly seen the ten benefits, the training of the Hearers should be established in the Vinaya, and so on, as before. My Hearers should recite the training of the Vinaya as follows: Drinking grain alcohol and prepared alcohol that intoxicates is a downfall. Grain alcohol is: barley beverage, flour beverage, and malt beverage. Prepared alcohol is: root beverage, stem beverage, leaf beverage, flower beverage, and fruit beverage. The mixture of the two is called grain alcohol and prepared alcohol. Drinking it means swallowing it into the throat. "It is a downfall" means: it burns, cooks, and causes one to fall into sentient being hells, animals, hungry ghosts, bad destinies, evil paths, and wrong views. Furthermore, as long as that downfall is not confessed and not individually confessed, it obstructs virtuous dharmas, therefore it is said to be a downfall. How does one fall into a downfall? If a bhikshu drinks a beverage that has an intoxicating color, an intoxicating smell, an intoxicating taste, and an intoxicating sensation, and becomes intoxicated after drinking it, it is a downfall; if he does not become intoxicated after drinking it, it is a misdeed. If a bhikshu drinks a beverage that has an intoxicating color, an intoxicating smell, and an intoxicating taste, and becomes intoxicated after drinking it, it is a downfall; if he does not become intoxicated after drinking it, it is a misdeed. If a bhikshu drinks a beverage that has an intoxicating color and an intoxicating smell, and becomes intoxicated after drinking it, it is a downfall; if he does not become intoxicated after drinking it, it is a misdeed. There is no downfall in drinking only the unmixed intoxicating color, because that has become salt. If a bhikshu drinks grain alcohol, it is a downfall. If he drinks prepared alcohol, it is a downfall. If he drinks grain alcohol and prepared alcohol, it is a downfall. If a bhikshu drinks grain
