He thought: Why didn't the Blessed One and the venerable monks take the staff? He thought, they want to proclaim my merits, so he thought: I should fulfill the teacher's intention. Thinking, he stood up halfway from his seat, stretched out his arm like an elephant's trunk, and took the staff. Then, the Blessed One said to the venerable Ananda: Ananda, which venerable monk took the staff? Venerable, it was the venerable Well-Come who took it. The Blessed One said: Ananda, go and tell the monk Well-Come: That is a vicious Naga, you must protect your body. The venerable Ananda heard from the Blessed One and said: As you command, venerable. Then he said to the venerable Well-Come: Venerable Well-Come, the Blessed One said: That is a vicious Naga, you must protect your body. The venerable Well-Come said: Venerable Ananda, having heard the teacher's teachings, I will obey. Otherwise, even if Nagas like the Mango Riverbank Naga were to fill the entire Jambudvipa, like a sugarcane forest, a reed forest, or a rush forest, they would not be able to move even a hair on my body, so how could they hinder my body? Because I have already practiced and become familiar with the four bases of miraculous power in the presence of the Blessed One, and have practiced them many times. Then, after that night passed, the venerable Well-Come put on his robes in the morning, took his bowl and robes, and went to Crocodile-Child-Killing Mountain to beg for alms. After begging for alms on Crocodile-Child-Killing Mountain, he went to the place where the Mango Riverbank Naga was. The Mango Riverbank Naga saw the venerable Well-Come coming from afar. Seeing him, it thought: Did this Shramana hear the news of my death? Or is he coming to my abode? For now, this person is a sudden occurrence, let him come. Then, the venerable Well-Come took the water strainer and bowl

Having placed the bowl aside, he shook out the monastic robe, washed his two feet, rinsed his two hands, drained the water, picked up the fallen leaves, and sat down to begin the work of preparing food. Then, the Venerable Sāgata, while preparing food, thought: 'A fierce nāga cannot be tamed unless provoked; this must be a fierce nāga, so I should provoke it.' Thinking this, he washed the bowl and poured the water from washing the bowl into the pond. The nāga of the Amra riverbank was provoked and thought: 'If I forget even to eat because this śrāmaṇa has come, he is despising me by pouring the water from washing the bowl in my abode; this śrāmaṇa is not easy to pacify.' Thinking this, it became angry and rose manifestly into the sky above, uttering a great thunderous sound. It began to rain down various weapons such as a single-pointed vajra, a wheel, a great arrow, and a single-pointed weapon upon the Venerable Sāgata. The Venerable Sāgata entered into the samādhi of loving-kindness, and those weapons turned into heavenly utpala (梵文:utpala, blue lotus), lotus, kumuda (梵文:kumuda, white lotus), and white lotus flowers, and fell upon the body of the Venerable Sāgata. The nāga of the Amra riverbank began to rain down showers of embers, and the Venerable Sāgata entered into the samādhi of loving-kindness, and those embers turned into heavenly mandarava flowers, and fell upon the body of the Venerable Sāgata. The nāga of the Amra riverbank began to rain down showers of dust, and the Venerable Sāgata entered into the samādhi of loving-kindness, and those dusts turned into heavenly aguru (梵文:aguru, black agarwood) powder, sandalwood powder, Chinese incense powder, and tamāla-patra (梵文:tamāla-patra,Indian bay leaf) powder, and fell upon the body of the Venerable Sāgata. The nāga of the Amra riverbank emitted smoke with the power of anger, and the Venerable Sāgata also emitted smoke with the power of magical ability. The nāga of the Amra riverbank ignited fire with the power of anger, and the Venerable Sāgata entered into the fire element samādhi. Then, a great light arose from the power of the nāga of the Amra riverbank's anger and the power of the Venerable Sāgata's magical ability.
