Therefore, having shaved his hair and beard, donned the robes, and with firm faith in the true Dharma, he goes forth from the household life into homelessness. Through his own realization, in this very life he personally verifies the ultimate of the unsurpassed Brahmacharya, and knows that my cycle of rebirth is exhausted, the Brahmacharya has been established, what needs to be done has been done, and there will be no further existence. Having attained the Arhat state, free from the desires of the three realms, regarding rubble and gold as equal, possessing a mind equal to the sky and the palm of the hand. Like sandalwood placed, wisdom breaks through the eggshell, obtaining wisdom, enlightenment, and perfect knowledge, turning away from samsara and the pursuit of worldly gains and respect, becoming an object to be offered to, remembered, and praised by the gods and their retinues. Then, the venerable Sāgata attained the Arhat state, experiencing the joy and bliss of liberation. At that time, he spoke these verses: Seeing that hero, Binding me with the rope of skillful means, Like an old elephant pulled from the mud, With compassion, he pulled me from the mud of suffering. I was formerly ill-come, After that, well-come, Now, by the words of the Able One, I have become purely well-come. The omniscient one is like iron, Having heard your excellent words, Now like gold, I have obtained a body without outflows. Obtaining jewels and so on, And those seeking heavenly liberation, Those who always desire benefit, It is good to rely on a virtuous teacher. . . . Vinaya-vibhaṅga, sixty-fifth fascicle. When the venerable Sāgata went forth in the well-spoken Vinaya, other non-Buddhists with knowledge said: The śrāmaṇa Gautama says that his teachings are completely beautiful, but even ascetics like Ill-come are made to go forth, so how can his teachings be completely beautiful? They began to slander, accuse, and mock. The Blessed One thought: Many ordinary people are slandering the great śrāvaka who is like Mount Sumeru.

Because it produces medicinal herbs, where should one proclaim the virtues of this place? One should proclaim it right where it grows and where it collapses, he thought. Then, the Blessed One said to the venerable Ananda: "Ananda, go and tell the monks that the Thus-Gone One will go on a pilgrimage to the land of the outcastes. Like a king surrounded by a multitude of treasure vases, like one with bad eyes surrounded by a multitude of nagas, like a bestower of wealth surrounded by a multitude of yakshas, like woven copper ornaments surrounded by a multitude of asuras, like Indra surrounded by a multitude of the Thirty-Three, like Brahma surrounded by a multitude of Brahma's retinue, with faculties extremely tamed, conduct and behavior unperturbed. Like a reservoir, still; like a cloud, full of water; like an elephant king, free from pride; well adorned with the thirty-two marks of a great being; with the eighty minor marks making the body exceedingly beautiful; the body adorned with a fathom of light; possessing light surpassing a thousand suns; like a moving mountain of jewels, all-good; possessing the ten powers, the four fearlessnesses, the three unmixed mindfulnesses, and great compassion. Surrounded and led by those great hearers such as the venerable Ajnata Kaundinya, Asvajit, Bhadrika, Vashpa, Mahanama, Yashas, Purna, Vimala, Gavampati, Subahu, and many other communities of monks, when the Blessed One was traveling in the vicinity of Nangan Spong in the place called Kumaragriva on the Crocodile Child-Killing Mountain, he arrived at the Crocodile Child-Killing Mountain and resided in the fearful grove of the Crocodile Child-Killing Mountain, in the deer park forest. The Brahmins and householders of the Crocodile Child-Killing Mountain heard that the Blessed One, while traveling in the vicinity of Nangan Spong, had arrived at the Crocodile Child-Killing Mountain and was residing in the fearful grove of the Crocodile Child-Killing Mountain, in the deer park forest. Having heard this, they gathered from village to village, from town to town, and having assembled, they came from the Crocodile Child-Killing Mountain to where the Blessed One was, bowed their heads at the feet of the Blessed One, and sat down on one side. Having sat down on one side, the Blessed One taught the Brahmins and householders of the Crocodile Child-Killing Mountain with a Dharma-related discourse.
