I thought, 'Because of that reason, there will be a place of suffering due to impropriety,' so he abandoned it. Even 'Well Come' forgot it due to karmic obscurations, and entered among those beggars. After some time, those beggars also became empty-handed, and their bowls were empty, and they returned and said: 'Wise ones, when we entered before, our hands were full, and our bowls were full when we returned, but now we are empty-handed, and our bowls are empty when we return, what is the reason for this?' They said: 'Some unfortunate beings have entered among us, therefore we are empty-handed, and our bowls are empty when we return.' They also said: 'Let us examine, we should divide ourselves into two and then enter,' so they divided themselves into two and entered, and those into whom 'Well Come' entered, their hands were empty, and their bowls were empty when they returned. They also divided themselves into two and entered, and those into whom 'Well Come' entered, their hands were empty, and their bowls were empty when they returned. They also divided themselves into two again and entered, and it was still the same. They also divided themselves into two again and again and entered, and it was like that, like that, and after some time, even when 'Well Come' and one or two other beggars entered together, they were also separated, and 'Well Come' came empty-handed, and his bowl was empty, but all the others came with their hands full, and their bowls were full, and then they said: 'This unfortunate being has entered among us, therefore we are empty-handed, and our bowls are empty when we return,' so they beat 'Well Come' severely, smashed his head with a bowl, and said: 'Evil Come, go away,' and drove him away. The householder Anathapindika invited the Buddha and the Sangha of monks to another house for a meal. He instructed those who lived on milk porridge: 'Wise ones, until the Buddha and the Sangha of monks have finished their meal, do not allow any beggars to enter.'

They should be given alms later. Then, when those beggars began to enter, the gatekeeper turned them back, and they said, 'Hey, inner master, we are known by the name of the householder Good Giving, called Anathapindika the almsgiver, why do you turn us back?' They also said, 'Wise ones, has not that misfortune entered among us? Look.' When they saw that good fortune had entered, they said, 'This is the misfortune.' They beat the good fortune very hard, smashed his head with a beggar's bowl, and then they grabbed his hands and feet, dragged him onto the garbage heap, and said, 'Misfortune, you stay here.' The good fortune was crying on that garbage heap. Then, the Blessed One, in the morning, having put on his lower garment, and carrying his bowl and religious robe, surrounded by a gathering of monks, and led by the monastic community of monks, went to the place of the householder Anathapindika. The Blessed One saw the good fortune on the garbage heap, his head smashed, bleeding, and crying. Having seen this, he said to the monks, 'Monks, even a sentient being in its last existence can become like this, so one should be satiated with existence, and also satiated with the things of existence.' Then, the Blessed One said to the venerable Ananda, 'Ananda, you should leave the remainder of the bowl for the good fortune.' Then, the Blessed One went to the place of the householder Anathapindika, and having arrived, sat down on the seat that had been prepared before the monastic community of monks. Then, the householder Anathapindika, knowing that the Buddha and the monastic community of monks were seated comfortably, with clean and delicious food, satisfied them from his own hands. In various ways, with clean and delicious food, he satisfied them from his own hands and offered it, and the Blessed One accepted the parasol and washed his hands.

Seeing the (monk) put down the alms bowl, he took a very low cushion and sat down in front of the Blessed One to listen to the Dharma. The Venerable Ananda forgot to put the leftovers in the alms bowl for the almsgiver. The Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, have the nature of not forgetting, so the Blessed One put the leftovers in the alms bowl for the almsgiver. Then, the Venerable Ananda began to pick up the Blessed One's alms bowl, and at that moment, the Venerable Ananda heard the Blessed One say to him, 'Ananda, put the leftovers in the alms bowl for the almsgiver!' Because he remembered what he had forgotten, he began to cry. The Blessed One said, 'Ananda, why are you crying?' (Ananda replied) 'Venerable, I forgot to put the leftovers in the alms bowl for the almsgiver, and I have disobeyed the Blessed One's teachings.' 'Ananda, you have not disobeyed my teachings, but because of the almsgiver's own karmic obscurations, you forgot to give him the leftovers in the alms bowl.' 'Ananda, go and call the almsgiver!' He went and called out, 'Almsgiver, almsgiver!' Many people answered 'Yes,' and they thought, 'Who is the Blessed One, the lord of the three realms, thinking of today?' The Venerable Ananda returned and reported, 'Venerable, when I called out almsgiver, almsgiver, many people answered yes, what should I do?' 'Ananda, go and call out like this: 'The one who kills children with crocodiles, the one who lives in the mountains, the son of the wealthy householder, the one named Almsgiver, come here!'' The Venerable Ananda went and called out like that. The Almsgiver remembered my name, and he spoke these verses: 'If the sound of Almsgiver is abandoned, from where can one come here? Surely the bad has been exhausted, and the good has also happened. Those who have refuge in you, the protector of those people is the all-knowing one. Those who delight in your words, those noble ones are the Almsgivers. I am without fortune, abandoned by all roots, having obtained the place of intense love, is one tormented by the arrow of sorrow.' The Venerable Ananda
