Why can't we go out? In this way, each one had such a thought, and so the other sixteen all went back to sleep separately. Only that one Gekö (monk in charge of discipline) toiled through the night, and when morning dawned, he collected the lamps, opened the doors, swept and whitewashed the temple, kept track of the time, laid out the mats, offered incense around the stupa, and then stood on top of the temple and began to strike the Ghandi (a percussion instrument). Then the sixteen were awakened by the sound of the Ghandi, and came out from their respective rooms carrying their begging bowls. When they saw that Gekö running back and forth alone, they said to each other, 'Venerable ones, since this one is running back and forth alone, hasn't anyone among us helped him?' One said, 'I had the thought, I fell asleep because of a transgression. Why can't sixteen people go out?' Similarly, others also said that. Others also said that, and all said that. Then the sixteen said, 'Venerable ones, since we should have been the first to go to all the immediate tasks, our not helping him was not good of us, and he will surely scold us. Let us ask for forgiveness as soon as we have eaten.' So they ate and began to ask for forgiveness. The younger ones touched his two feet, and the older ones embraced him from the neck, saying, 'Venerable one, please forgive us.' But he remained silent. One who was very close to him tickled him, and he began to laugh and also said, 'I forgive you.' They thought, 'This is a good method.' So others also tickled him, and in that way, everyone took turns tickling him. As a result, he passed wind upwards and died. They began to weep and mourn. The monks said, 'Hey, you group of seventeen, why are you weeping and mourning?' They said, 'We were formerly a group of seventeen, but now we have become a group of sixteen, living together in pure conduct, how delightful!'

The downfall of being separated and defeated has occurred. Those monks said, "It is not good," and then left. Those sixteen also completely left, sinking into depression and silence. Other monks saw this and began to scold those monks, saying, "These venerable seventeen groups are like a fire of thatch, burning in an instant and dying in an instant. One moment arrogant and conceited, and the next sinking into depression and silence." They were burned in their hearts by the fire of sorrow, and although they were scolded, they said nothing, just sinking into depression and silence. Acharya saw them sinking into depression and silence, and said, "Seventeen groups, why are you sinking into depression and silence?" They said, "Do you still think we are a group of seventeen? Why not?" They described the situation in detail. Some monks with few desires scolded, "Why do monks use their fingers to accuse monks, mock, and slander?" The monks reported the situation to the Blessed One. Then, because of this event, this origin, this situation, the Blessed One convened the monastic community of monks, and so on, just as before. The Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, act knowingly, and so on, also as before. The Buddha, the Blessed One, questioned the seventeen groups, "Monks, is it true that you accuse with your fingers and mock?" "Venerable One, it is true." The Buddha, the Blessed One, rebuked, "This is not in accordance with the practice of a Shramana, it is not in accordance, it is not appropriate, it is not in accordance with the Dharma, a renunciant should not do such things." Then, the Blessed One rebuked in various ways and said to the monks, "Monks, therefore, in order to correctly see the ten benefits, the basis of learning should be established for the Shravakas." And so on, just as before. "My Shravakas should recite the basis of learning in this way: If you accuse with your fingers and mock, you will commit a downfall. If you accuse with your fingers and mock, then..."

The so-called "earth" refers to using the fingers with the intention of doing "gaga tsil" (藏文,梵文天城體,梵文羅馬擬音,漢語字面意思:scratching), whatever actions, behaviors, and movements of the body are included. The so-called "offense of downfall" refers to causing sentient beings to fall into hell, animals, hungry ghosts, evil destinies, and places of downfall, burning, tormenting, and causing them to fall. Furthermore, if these offenses of downfall are not confessed, and not confessed individually, they will obstruct virtuous dharmas. Therefore, it is called "offense of downfall." So, how does one incur an offense of downfall? If a bhikshu uses one finger to do "gaga tsil" (藏文,梵文天城體,梵文羅馬擬音,漢語字面意思:scratching) to another bhikshu, it constitutes an offense of downfall. Using two fingers, three fingers, four fingers, or five fingers to do "gaga tsil" (藏文,梵文天城體,梵文羅馬擬音,漢語字面意思:scratching) also constitutes an offense of downfall. Using a fist, elbow, shoulder, head, chest, back, waist, thigh, buttocks, or even the toe of the foot to do "gaga tsil" (藏文,梵文天城體,梵文羅馬擬音,漢語字面意思:scratching) also constitutes an offense of downfall. Indicating wounds, blisters, pimples, moles, or pores does not constitute an offense of downfall. For beginners, the insane, the mentally disturbed, and those afflicted by feelings, there is no offense of downfall. The sixty-third offense of downfall regarding doing "gaga tsil" (藏文,梵文天城體,梵文羅馬擬音,漢語字面意思:scratching) is complete. The Buddha Bhagavan was residing in Śrāvastī, in the Jeta Grove, Anāthapiṇḍada's Park. At that time, the venerable Nanda, from among the seventeen groups, having abandoned all defilements, had realized the state of Arhat. Then, he thought: Do my fellow practitioners of the Brahmacharya have any roots of virtue? He saw that they did. Upon whom do they depend? He saw that they depended on himself. Therefore, in order to tame the other sixteen, he followed after them. Those people said: Venerable ones, we are going to the bank of the Ganges River for water, and we will also bathe there. So they took water filters and water bottles and went to where the Ganges River was. Those people said: Venerable ones, how should we bathe? Or should we filter the water first? They said: We should filter the water first, and then bathe. So they filtered the water, took off all their clothes, and began to bathe.
