Summary: Animals, regret, fingers, top and together with fright, hiding and without roots, without foundation, walking without a husband. The Buddha, the Bhagavan, was dwelling in Jeta's Grove in Anathapindika's Garden in Shravasti. There was no archery teacher, only some children were sitting there, and he asked the children: Children, what are you doing? They said: Holy one, we are learning archery. Charka said: Children, very good, you are surpassing the highest skill, look, shoot to the left, shoot to the right, shoot five arrows! They began to shoot to the left, shoot to the right, shoot five arrows, they folded their hands, their faces changed. They said: Holy one, why do you fold your hands, your face changes? Charka said: Now even your teacher does not know, how can you learn? They said: Holy one, do you know a little about this? Charka said: On the earth, what craft and work is there that I do not know? They said: Holy one, please borrow it, first shoot to the left, then shoot to the right, then shoot five arrows. Charka said: Bring the bow. They handed him the bow, and Charka said: This bow is like a bow made of cotton, bring another bow. They handed him the second bow and the third bow, and Charka said: These bows are also like bows made of cotton, bring your teacher's bow. They handed him the teacher's bow, and Charka said: This is also about the same. He said, pulling the bow like a bow made of cotton, making the sound of the string, and a flock of crows began to fly in the sky, and Charka said: How is it? Should I shoot this crow from the butt and shoot it out from the mouth? Or should I shoot it in from the mouth and shoot it out from the butt? They

He said, "Please, holy one, shoot into the buttock and take it out through the mouth." Charka shot an arrow into the sky above the east, and then shot one arrow each into the sky above the south, west, and north. The crow then began to fly upwards. Charka then shot an arrow after it, which struck the crow's buttock and came out through its mouth, and the crow fell to the ground. They were amazed and sat there with doubt in their hearts. Charka said, "Children, should you learn the craft like this, or should you seek another teacher? What's the use of sitting here holding empty husks without fruit?" Having said this, he left. They sat there with doubt in their hearts, and after a while, their teacher came and said, "Children, why are you sitting here with doubt in your hearts? Shoot to the left buttock, the right buttock, and shoot five arrows, and they will fold their hands and change their expressions." The teacher said, "Children, if such an unprecedented transformation has occurred, hasn't someone come here? Who is it? Is it the holy Charka? What did he do? He shot five arrows, striking this crow's buttock and coming out through its mouth." He said, "Children, wherever the Bodhisattva learned the art of shooting arrows, he also learned it, and if he had not become a renunciate, he would become the best archery teacher in all of Jambudvipa. However, what do I know? Learn from me for now, and learn the rest from others. He thought, "He will surpass me again and again, and I will be displeased." So, he said to those children, "Children, do you want the noble Charka's fame to be widely spread in all directions?" They said, "Yes." He said, "When the holy Charka goes for alms, you should hold this crow's corpse on the tip of a long bamboo pole and follow him, announcing to the people, 'The holy Charka shot five arrows, like this, striking this crow's buttock and coming out through its mouth, look!' And if he says, 'Go back!' you should say that too."

Do not come back! The next day, the Venerable Lamp kindled, having dressed in his lower garment, took his bowl and robes and went to Shravasti for alms. Those boys saw him, and they tied the corpse of a crow to the end of a long bamboo pole, following after the Venerable Lamp kindled step by step, and shouting, "Look, this Venerable Lamp kindled shot five arrows like this, hitting this crow's butt and then picking it out." Lamp kindled saw them and said, "Boys, why are you mocking me like this, come back!" However, even if they did not come back, they still shouted like that, "Brahmins and householders, knowledgeable ones, these Shakyaputra shramanas are killers, they have not returned from killing, have not abandoned, have not separately abandoned. Knowledgeable ones, the Shakyaputra shramanas do not even need the skin of any sentient being, nor flesh and tendons, nor bones, yet they still kill like this, look! Who would think of giving alms and doing things for these bald-headed shramanas?" They cursed, mocked, and spoke ill. At that time, the monks reported this matter to the Blessed One. Then, the Blessed One, because of this event, this origin, and this occasion, convened the Sangha of monks, etc., all as before. The Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, cultivate knowingly, etc., also as before. The Buddha, the Blessed One, rebuked Lamp kindled: "Lamp kindled, is it true that you did such an unseemly thing?" "Venerable One, it is true." The Buddha, the Blessed One, rebuked: "This is not the conduct of a shramana, not in accordance, not appropriate, not in accordance with the rules, this is not something that a renunciant should do." Then, the Blessed One, having rebuked in various ways, said to the monks: "Monks, therefore, in order to fully see the ten benefits, the foundation of learning should be established for the shravaka disciples," etc., all as before. "My shravaka disciples should learn the foundation of discipline."
