It should be declared thus: Furthermore, if a bhikkhu knowingly kills a sentient being belonging to the animal realm, he commits an offense entailing downfall. Furthermore, "bhikkhu" refers to one who is shaven-headed, or anyone similar to that. "Knowingly" means after having thoroughly considered. "Sentient being belonging to the animal realm" refers to a crow or anything similar to that. "Kills" means causing the severance of its life. "Offense entailing downfall" means burning, boiling, and causing sentient beings to fall into hell, the animal realm, the realm of hungry ghosts, evil destinies, and perverse downfalls. Furthermore, as long as that offense entailing downfall is not confessed and individually confessed, it obstructs virtuous dharmas. Therefore, it is said that it is an offense entailing downfall. So, how does it become an offense entailing downfall? In the intermediate summary, it says: Having seized by oneself, Having thrown outwards, Having both, Is a perfectly gathered aggregate. How does it become an offense entailing downfall by having seized by oneself? A bhikkhu, with the intention to kill a sentient being belonging to the animal realm, thinks: "By this action, may it die." And so, he pokes it with one finger. If that action causes it to die, then the bhikkhu commits an offense entailing downfall. If it does not die at that time, but dies after that, then the bhikkhu commits an offense entailing downfall. If it does not die at that time, nor does it die after that, then the bhikkhu commits a misdeed due to that previous action. Just as with one finger, if he thinks: "By this action, may it die." And so, he pokes it with two fingers, or three, or four, or five, or a fist, or an elbow, or a shoulder, or a head, or a chest, or a waist, or a thigh, or a knee, or a shin, or an ankle, or a sole of the foot, or even with the toe of the foot.

Thus, it is thus held by its own nature. How is it thrown outwards? A monk, with the intention to kill a sentient being belonging to the animal realm, thinks thus: 'May this one die by this action.' If he strikes with an arrow, and that action causes death, the monk commits a downfall. If it is not at that time, but after that, the monk commits a downfall. If it is not at that time, nor after that, the monk commits only a misdeed by the previous action. Like an arrow, thinking thus: 'May this one die by this action.' With an iron arrow, or a half-arrow made of iron, or a small knife, or a barbed arrowhead, or a four-cornered arrowhead, or an arrowhead like an oleander leaf, or an arrowhead like a bird's heart, or a wheel, or a single-pointed vajra, or a large arrow, or a single-pointed weapon, even striking with a juniper fruit. If that action causes death, the monk commits a downfall. If it is not at that time, but after that, the monk commits a downfall. If it is not at that time, nor after that, the monk commits only a misdeed by the previous action. Thus, it is thrown outwards. How is it endowed with both? A monk, with the intention to kill a sentient being belonging to the animal realm, thinks thus: 'May this one die by this action.' If he strikes with a sword, and that action causes death, the monk commits a downfall. If it is not at that time, but after that, the monk commits a downfall. If it is not at that time, nor after that, the monk commits only a misdeed by the previous action. Like a sword, thinking thus: 'May this one die by this action.' With a sickle, or a single-edged sword, or a double-edged sword, or a spear, or a javelin, or a scimitar, or a whip, even striking with a grass arrow. If that action causes death, the monk commits a downfall.

will fall. If he did not do it at that time, but did it after that, then the bhikkhu will commit a transgression. If he did not do it at that time, and did not do it after that, then the bhikkhu will commit a misdeed by the previous action. Therefore, he possesses both of these conditions. For the beginner, the insane, the mentally disturbed, and those afflicted by feelings, there is no transgression. The transgression of killing animals, this is the sixty-first, ends. The Buddha, the Blessed One, was dwelling in Anathapindika's Grove in Jeta's Grove in Shravasti (ancient Indian city, c. 6th century BCE). At that time, the Venerable Great Maudgalyayana ordained and fully ordained the group of seventeen young men born of Sarpa, including the attendant Ananda. At that time, they relied on the Six Groups, approached and revered them. Then, the Venerable Acharya said to the Seventeen Groups: "Seventeen Groups, come here! Do this and this!" They said: "Are you our teacher? Are you our Khenpo? We will not do anything." Acharya said: "You fools, then what else can you do?" Saying this, he grabbed them by the necks and drove them out. They said: "Venerable ones, any contempt we have shown to the Six Groups is because we have heard too little. We want to learn more, so that in the future we will not have to ask the Six Groups any questions." Saying this, they went to a bhikkhu and said: "Venerable one, please let us read." He said: "It is possible." So they began to read with him. Nears Delight said: "Venerable one, Acharya and the Seventeen Groups no longer rely on us, no longer approach us, no longer respect us." Acharya said: "I drove them away, and now they have begun to learn. Venerable one, Acharya, you have struck the sleeping snake with a whip. As long as those foolish ones have little hearing, they will rely on us, approach us, and respect us. Once they have heard much, they will become holders of the Sutras, holders of the Vinaya, holders of the Matrikas, and...
