If one says, "A downfall that leads to defeat has occurred," whether the monk feels regret or not, it becomes a cause of downfall for the monk. There is no downfall through other meanings or through the implements of the Vinaya. How is it through other meanings? For example, a monk goes to another monk and asks, "Venerable, do you remember such and such a king, wealthy person, merchant, or captain?" If he says, "I don't remember," then because it was in the past, the venerable one does not remember, and the venerable one has been well and completely ordained." Saying this, there is no downfall. For example, a monk goes to another monk and asks, "Venerable, do you remember such and such a lunar eclipse or solar eclipse?" If he says, "I don't remember," then because it was in the past, the venerable one does not remember, and the venerable one has been well and completely ordained." Saying this, there is no downfall. For example, a monk goes to another monk and asks, "Venerable, do you remember such and such a good year or a bad year?" If he says, "I don't remember," then because it was in the past, the venerable one does not remember, and the venerable one has been well and completely ordained." Saying this, there is no downfall. Thus, it is through other meanings. How is it through the implements of the Vinaya? For example, a monk goes to another monk and asks, "Venerable, in what place were you completely ordained?" If he says, "In such and such a place," then because that place is a place where the boundary has been defined and where there is agreement among the Sangha, the venerable one has been well and completely ordained." Saying this, there is no downfall. For example, a monk goes to another monk and asks, "Venerable, who is your preceptor? Who is your instructor?" If he says, "My preceptor is such and such, and my instructor is such and such," then because those two are monks who uphold the precepts, if you serve those two, you will accumulate much merit, and the venerable one has been well and completely ordained." Saying this, there is no downfall. For example, a monk goes to another monk and asks, "Venerable, you

Asked, 'Did you take the robes of the Khenpo and Acharya?' If they say they took them, say, 'Do not take them with a stealing mind. Do not commit a transgression that leads to defeat.' Saying this, there is no downfall. For example, a bhikshu goes to a bhikshu and asks, 'Venerable one, are you going to such and such a place?' If they say they are going, say, 'Venerable one, that place is a place of thieves, do not go there. You are a practitioner of pure conduct, do not cause the wise to doubt what should not be doubted, do not cause thought about what should not be thought about.' Saying this, there is no downfall. For example, a bhikshu goes to a bhikshu and asks, 'Venerable one, did you say in the Sangha, "All conditioned things are impermanent, all dharmas are without self, Nirvana is peace"?' If they say they said it, say, 'Do not speak of superior human dharmas, do not commit a transgression that leads to defeat.' Saying this, there is no downfall. Thus, this is about the implements of discipline. There is no downfall for beginners, the insane, the mentally disturbed, and those afflicted by suffering. The sixty-two offenses that cause regret are completed. The Buddha, the Bhagavan, was dwelling in Shravasti, in the Jeta Grove, Anathapindika's Park. At that time, the great son, the Venerable Maudgalyayana, ordained and fully ordained the group of seventeen young Sarva-born lads, including the attendant Ananda. At that time, if one of the seventeen was assigned a task, they would all do it together. Once, in that monastery, they listened to the Dharma late into the night, and then they all fell down with a 'thud.' The next day, at the Sangha gathering, they were also listening to the Dharma, and they all fell down with a 'thud' again. The day after that, one of the seventeen was assigned as the steward, and that day they all decorated the monastery and sat down. Then, when the steward fell down with a 'thud,' one of the seventeen thought, 'I fell asleep.' Sixteen people
