At what time did a certain monk recognize his own Dharma robe from the sewing, and then he said: Venerable ones, these Dharma robes are mine, but the Khenpo used them. Nanda said: Stingy ones, you should not be so unhappy. They said: Venerable ones, because these Dharma robes are the best road Dharma robes, we will wear them and go. They put on the road Dharma robes and went there. The monks said to them: Venerable ones, why do you come wearing road Dharma robes when you have sewn and stored Dharma robes? They said: We have sewn and stored them. Then why don't you wear those? They explained the situation in detail. Those monks with few desires scolded: Why do monks give Dharma robes to monks and then use them for free underneath? They condemned, ridiculed, and satirized. At that time, the monks reported the matter to the Blessed One. Then, because of this incident, this origin, and this situation, the Blessed One convened the Sangha of monks, and so on, as before. The Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, knowingly commit offenses, and so on, also as before. The Buddha, the Blessed One, questioned Nanda, the son of the Shakya clan: Nanda, is it true that you gave Dharma robes to a monk and then used them for free underneath? Venerable One, it is true. The Buddha, the Blessed One, rebuked him: This is not the conduct of a Shramana, it is not in accordance, it is not proper, it is not in accordance with the rules, this is not something that a renunciant should do. Thus, he rebuked him in various ways. Then, after rebuking him in various ways, the Blessed One said to the monks: Monks, therefore, in order to correctly see the ten benefits, the foundation of training should be established for the hearers in the Vinaya, and so on, as before. My hearers should recite the foundation of training in the Vinaya in this way: If any monk gives clothes to a monk and then uses them for free underneath, he commits a downfall. Any monk, refers to Nanda, the son of the Shakya clan, or anyone else like him.

"Bhikkhu" means the holder of this Dharma. "Robe" means any of the three: sanghati, uttarasanga, and antarvasa. "Having given" means having given without taking back. "After that" means at another time. "Without returning" means without taking back. "Using" means wearing. "Falling" means causing beings to burn, torment, and fall into hell, animals, hungry ghosts, evil destinies, evil paths, and wrong views. Furthermore, if the downfall is not confessed and separately confessed, it obstructs virtuous dharmas. Therefore, it is called "falling." So, how does one fall? If a bhikkhu gives a bhikkhu a little robe, and then uses it without returning it, then everything becomes a downfall. If one feels joy, is attracted, is satisfied, and generates great joy upon hearing it, there is no downfall. There is no downfall for a beginner, a madman, a disturbed mind, and one who is afflicted by feelings. The downfall of living by giving, the one hundred and sixty-eighth, is complete. The Buddha, the Bhagavan, was dwelling in Rajagriha, in the place of Kalandaka in the Bamboo Grove. At that time, the venerable Kashyapa was dwelling on Mount Gridhrakuta in Rajagriha. Not far from there, there was a place called the Stone-Walled Pond, and the venerable Kashyapa would dwell there during the day. When the virtuous friend of lotus color, the great son of the venerable Maudgalyayana, relied on him and renounced the well-spoken Dharma Vinaya, and became an Arhat, victorious from victory, at that time, knowing this, with faith, he went to see the Bhagavan and the elder monks, and especially the venerable Kashyapa, like this, even though the Arhat meditates on the eight liberations, he abandons the bliss of meditation, liberation, and samadhi, and is diligent in the duties of the Sangha, he thought, "This is doing asceticism."
