Therefore, except for such circumstances. Then, the Blessed One praised the desire to learn, respect for learning, and frugality in the use of learning materials. He then addressed the monks with Dharma talks that were relevant, consistent, and appropriate to the monks. He then addressed the monks, saying: Monks, therefore, the former is prescribed, and this is permitted. My disciples should recite the basis for learning the Vinaya as follows: If any monk hides or causes others to hide the bowl, robes, water strainer, needle case, belt, or any means of livelihood of a monk, nun, probationary nun, novice, or female novice, except for such circumstances, it is a Patayantika offense. Again, "any monk" means the son of the Shakya, Nanda, or anyone else like him. "Monk, nun, probationary nun, novice, or female novice" means belonging to this Dharma. "Bowl" means the bowl itself. "Robes" means any of the seven robes. "Water strainer" means the container for the bowl. "Needle case" means a needle case. "Belt" means a waistband, a strap, a rope, and a belt loop. "Any means of livelihood of a monk" means anything other than those mentioned above. "Hides" means hiding it oneself. "Causes to hide" means causing others to hide it. "Except for such circumstances" means excluding such circumstances. "Patayantika offense" means that it burns, torments, and causes beings to fall into hell, animals, hungry ghosts, evil destinies, bad paths, and wrong views. Furthermore, if the offense is not confessed and individually confessed, it obstructs virtuous Dharmas. Therefore, it is said to be a Patayantika offense. So, how does one become an offender? If a monk slightly hides or causes others to hide the bowl, robes, water strainer, needle case, belt, or any means of livelihood of a monk, nun, probationary nun, novice, or female novice, in all respects...

It will become a downfall. For beginners, the insane, the mentally disturbed, and those afflicted by sensations, there is no downfall. The hidden downfall, this sixty-seventh, is complete. The Buddha, the Bhagavan, was staying in Jeta Grove, Anathapindika's Park in Shravasti. At that time, the Venerable Charka, having abandoned all defilements, had realized the state of an Arhat. The Venerable Ananda went to Kaushambi, being small in stature and walking quickly, wearing two old robes. At that time, the Venerables Nanda and Upananda were residing in the Sangha. Then, the Venerable Upananda became old, and some who lived with him and were close to him did not listen to him, so that his monastic robes became dirty, but he was unable to wash and mend them himself. He thought, "I should devise a method." So he distributed those robes to those who lived with him and were close to him, giving double-layered robes to some, upper robes to some, and lower robes to others. Those people said, "Preceptor, are you going to wash and mend these and then take them back?" He said, "Children, I am old, these are yours." Those people, because of their own attachment, washed and mended those robes well. Then, the Bhagavan said to the Venerable Ananda, "Ananda, go and tell the monks that the Tathagata will go on a pilgrimage to the Kosalas, and whoever among you is willing to go on a pilgrimage to the Kosalas with the Tathagata should do the work of the monastic robes." The Venerable Ananda, having heard the Bhagavan's instruction, said to the monks, "Venerable ones, the Tathagata will go on a pilgrimage to the Kosalas, and whoever among you is willing to go on a pilgrimage to the Kosalas with the Tathagata should do the work of the monastic robes." Having heard that announcement, they took those robes and went to a certain monk and said, "Venerable one, please temporarily entrust these robes of ours to you, for we are going on a pilgrimage with the Bhagavan." That monk said, "Your...

Is the Khenpo also going? They said, "No." He said, "Entrust it here today. I will take care of it." Is it okay to say that? They went to Nyerga and said, "Khenpo, please keep these Dharma robes with you for a while. We are going on a journey with the Blessed One." Nyerga said, "Venerable ones, I am a monk who observes the precepts, and even if I am bound by grass, I will die. So, do not leave them with me, entrust them to some other monk friends." They said, "Khenpo, who is a better monk friend for us than you, Khenpo? We will leave them in your hands." Nyerga said, "If that is the case, then make a good mark and leave them, and when you return, it will be easy for each of you to take them." They left the Dharma robes there and went on a journey with the Blessed One. Nyerga took a lower garment from a box and wore it until it became very dirty, and then put it back in the same box. Similarly, he took an upper garment from a box and wore it, and in the same way, he used all the Dharma robes, and when they became very dirty, he tied them up and put them away as before. When the Blessed One traveled and arrived at Shravasti, a householder heard that the Blessed One and the Sangha of monks
