Then all that is said becomes a cause of downfall. He heard it, but he also spoke of it; he doubted it, but he also changed his perception in forgetting, as well as patience, desire, wisdom, thought, and view, saying, "I heard it, but I did not forget it; I doubted it, but I also did not forget it." If he says this, then all that is said becomes a cause of downfall. Believing what is heard and saying "I saw it," not believing what is heard and saying "I saw it," doubting what is heard and saying "I saw it," not doubting what is heard and saying "I saw it," doubting doubt and saying "I saw it," then all that is said becomes a cause of downfall. Thus, with ten bases, it becomes a cause of downfall. How does it not become a cause of downfall with five bases? For what he has not seen, not heard, and not doubted, he has not changed his perception, as well as patience, desire, wisdom, thought, and view, but says, "I saw it, I heard it, I doubted it." Saying this does not become a cause of downfall. He heard it, but he also forgot it; he doubted it, but he also did not change his perception in forgetting, as well as patience, desire, wisdom, thought, and view, but says, "I heard it, but I forgot it; I doubted it, but I forgot it." Saying this does not become a cause of downfall. Thus, with five bases, it does not become a cause of downfall. Just as slandering a pure person, with ten bases it becomes a cause of downfall, and with five bases it does not become a cause of downfall, so too, for slandering a pure person disguised as an impure person, with ten bases it becomes a cause of downfall, and with five bases it does not become a cause of downfall. For slandering an impure person, with eleven bases it becomes a cause of downfall, and with six bases it does not become a cause of downfall. How does it become a cause of downfall with eleven bases? For what he has not seen, not heard, and not doubted, he changed his perception, as well as patience, desire, wisdom, thought, and view, saying, "I saw it, I heard it, I doubted it." If he says this, then all that is said becomes a cause of downfall. He saw it, but he also forgot it; he heard

Regarding the ground, if one forgets that too, and if one forgets the doubt about it, and if one changes perception and endurance, desire, wisdom, discrimination, and view, saying, "I have seen, and I have not forgotten that. I have heard, and I have not forgotten that. I have doubted, and I have not forgotten that," then everything said becomes a downfall. Believing in what is heard and saying, "I have seen," and not believing in what is heard and saying, "I have seen," and doubting what is heard and saying, "I have seen," and not doubting what is heard and saying, "I have seen," and doubting the doubt and saying, "I have seen," then everything said becomes a downfall. Thus, one falls through eleven bases. How does one not fall through six bases? If one has not seen, has not heard, and does not doubt, and one does not change perception and endurance, desire, wisdom, discrimination, and view, saying, "I have seen, I have heard, I have doubted," then one does not fall. If one has seen and forgets that, and if one has heard and forgets that, and if one doubts and forgets that, and one does not change perception and endurance, desire, wisdom, discrimination, and view, saying, "I have seen, and I have not forgotten that. I have heard, and I have not forgotten that. I have doubted, and I have not forgotten that," then one does not fall. Thus, one does not fall through six bases. Just as defaming an impure person causes one to fall through eleven bases and not fall through six bases, so too, defaming an impure person who pretends to be pure also causes one to fall through eleven bases and not fall through six bases. There is no downfall in proclaiming. There is also no downfall in anything painted as a picture on a surface, if one thinks that just as I know, so too does the entire world know. There is no downfall for a beginner, one who is insane, one whose mind is disturbed, or one who is afflicted by feelings. This sixty-ninth downfall of defamation is complete. །། Buddha, the Bhagavan.
