At Sravasti, in the Jeta Grove, the Garden of Anathapindika. In Rajagriha, there was a weaver named 'Baldy,' who took a weaver's daughter from Sravasti as his wife, but he would repeatedly strike that daughter with fists and slaps. There was an old woman who lived nearby, and the daughter went to the old woman and said: 'Mother, this householder repeatedly strikes me with fists and slaps, so I am going to flee.' The old woman said: 'Daughter, as long as you have not given birth to a child, this householder will strike you, but when you have given birth to a child, he will become affectionate towards you, so do not flee, and I will dissuade him.' The old woman said to the weaver Baldy: 'Son, do not repeatedly strike this daughter with fists and slaps, for it would not be good if she were to flee, so do not strike her from now on.' Although the weaver was dissuaded by the old woman, he was not able to stop, and he continued to strike the daughter with fists and slaps. Then, on another occasion, the weaver drank wine in the shop and, drunk, went to his own house, and upon arriving, he beat the daughter severely. The daughter thought: 'Before I have given birth to a child, he will kill me, so even if I have no child, I will flee.' When the daughter saw that the weaver had fallen asleep, she opened the first door and fled. A monk had promised to spend the summer retreat in Rajagriha and then went to Sravasti to pay homage to the feet of the Blessed One. He also came out through the first door and went on his way. The daughter saw the monk and said to him: 'Venerable, where are you going?' The monk said: 'Sister, I am going to Sravasti.' The daughter said: 'I am also going to Sravasti. I will go together with the Venerable.' 'So be it.' The daughter began to go together with the monk. After a while, the weaver Baldy sobered up and, waking up and not seeing the daughter, went to the old woman and asked:

That girl disappeared. The old woman said: Son, I told you from the beginning, if she runs away, don't hit her, didn't I say that? Thinking she had run away, he asked the gatekeeper. That weaver went and asked the gatekeeper: Hey, chamberlain, did a girl come out of this gate? The gatekeeper said: She went out as soon as the gate was opened. That weaver climbed the wall and looked outside, and after a while, he saw her walking away from a very far place, so he hurried down and chased after her. After a while, he saw her walking with a monk. He thought: I am alone, and they are two, if I catch her, they will turn around and hit me, it will become such a situation. When I find a friend, I will catch her then, thinking like this. He followed behind those two. After a while, they went to a cliff. On that cliff, there were about five hundred weavers, and the head weaver went forward and said: Wise ones, if you are my relatives, then my wife has been robbed by a Shakya's monk, please help me, so he started to wave the flag and shout. Those weavers were all thoughtless people, they took about five hundred weaving shuttles, came down from the cliff, and beat that monk severely, even breaking his bowl. They also broke his rice bowl and water pot. They also tore his robes, and thinking he was going to die, they threw him away. That girl said to that monk: Holy one, you have already obtained permission from the king to be exempt from military service, so go to the king and say, please cut off these people's hands and feet. Those people were afraid and began to beg the monk for forgiveness, saying: Holy one, please forgive us. The monk's heart was as soft as butter, and he said: I forgive you. That girl said: Even if you forgive, Holy one, I will not forgive. Those people said to that girl: Sister, you are our relative, please forgive us too. That girl said: Forgiving you is okay, but I cannot forgive this head weaver, I will have his hands and feet

It should be cut off. They said, 'Please forgive this too!' The girl said, 'It can be forgiven with a vow, if you don't hit me in the future, then it can be forgiven.' The weaver said, 'I won't hit you in the future.' The girl said, 'If that's the case, then it can be forgiven.' That monk eventually went to Shravasti, and the monks said to him, 'Venerable, welcome, welcome! How did you get through safely?' 'Venerables, how did you get through safely? I was almost deprived of my life and chastity by those weavers.' 'Why?' He explained the situation in detail. The monks said, 'How can you walk on the road with a woman without a male companion? It is precisely because it is not appropriate that such a fault has occurred.' Those monks with few desires rebuked the monks for walking on the road with a woman without a male companion, condemned them, and spoke harshly to them. At that time, the monks reported this matter to the Blessed One. Then, because of this incident, this origin, this situation, the Blessed One convened the monastic community of monks, etc., just as before. 'Do the Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, knowingly commit transgressions?' etc., also as before. The Buddha, the Blessed One, rebuked that monk: 'Monk, is it true that you walked on the road with a woman without a male companion?' 'Venerable, it is true.' The Buddha, the Blessed One, rebuked him, saying, 'This is not the conduct of a renunciant, it is not in accordance, it is not appropriate, it is not in accordance with the rules, a renunciant should not do such a thing.' Then, after rebuking him in various ways, the Blessed One said to the monks, 'Monks, therefore, in order to truly see the ten benefits, the foundation of learning should be established for the hearers in the Vinaya,' etc., just as before. My hearers should recite the basis for learning in the Vinaya in this way: If any monk walks on the road with a woman without a male companion, even if it is only to the border of the village, he commits a downfall.
