The chief of kings began to pray, saying, 'May he become the best of those with divine eyes.' By the power of that prayer, the Tathagata is now shown to be the best of those with divine eyes. Monks, thus, the ripening of deeds that are entirely dark is entirely dark, and the ripening of deeds that are entirely white is also entirely white. The ripening of mixed deeds is also mixed. Monks, therefore, having abandoned deeds that are entirely dark and mixed deeds, one should strive for deeds that are entirely white. Monks, you should train yourselves in this way. The sixty-fifth downfall, that of sleeping with a woman, is complete. The Buddha, the Bhagavan, was dwelling in Jeta's Grove, Anathapindika's Park, in Shravasti. At one time, the venerable Maha Maudgalyayana conferred ordination and full Bhikshu ordination on a group of seventeen young men from Sarpa, including the attendant Ananda. At that time, they relied on the group of six, were close to the group of six, and revered the group of six. Then, Acharka said to them, "Group of seventeen, come here and do this and that." They said, "Are you our teacher? Are you our preceptor? We will not do it." Acharka said, "Foolish ones, then what else do you do?" Having said this, he grabbed them by the necks and drove them away. They said, "Venerable ones, any contempt we have shown to the group of six is because we have heard too little. We will go to learn hearing, and therefore we will not ask the group of six anything at all in the future." Having said this, they went to a certain Bhikshu and said, "Venerable one, please let us read." That Bhikshu said to them, "It is possible." Then, they began to read from him. Nears Delight said, "Venerable one, Acharka and the group of seventeen no longer rely on us, no longer are close to us, and no longer revere us." Acharka said, "I drove them away, and they have begun to learn hearing." Venerable one, Acharka, you have struck our sleeping snake with a whip. How long will those foolish ones hear so little?

As long as I exist, they will rely on us, be close to us, and serve us. When they become learned, proficient in the sutras, the Vinaya, and the Matrika, and are fierce and good at suppressing others, they will think of harming us. Charka said: I must ensure that what they have not understood cannot be understood, and that what they have understood is completely lost. The seventeen groups lit lamps and began to recite in the fire room. After a while, the venerable Charka, with his hair turned outwards, entered the fire room, blew out the lamps, and said: 'It has appeared, it has appeared!' They were frightened and terrified, came out of the fire room, and gathered in one place. Their teacher saw them and said: Young men, why are you not reciting, but sitting in silence? They said: Teacher, we are being harassed by non-humans. He thought: The Jeta Grove is always filled with five hundred yakshas wearing blue clothes, so there may be non-humans here. Perhaps some black-bowled ones who frequent evil places are threatening them. So he said: Young men, do you want to catch that non-human? They said: Yes. He said: Young men, light lamps in the four corners of the fire room, and also light a lamp in a clay pot, place it in the center, and then recite. If it comes, blows out the central lamp, and says 'It has appeared, it has appeared!' then close the door and grab the lamps in the four corners of the fire room. They did so. After a while, the venerable Charka, with his hair turned outwards, entered the fire room, blew out the central lamp, and said: 'It has appeared, it has appeared!' They closed the door, grabbed the lamps in the four corners of the fire room, and began to beat him. He said: Charka, Charka! They said: Do you think that in your heart, Charka is our friend, and if you say 'It is him, it is him' we will let you go? We will not let you go until you stop breathing. They said: Venerables, non-humans...

Even if one killed a very large animal, it would only become a serious offense, so we confessed and repented of the transgression. They said, "Strike the ribs," and those people struck his ribs violently. Charka was carried away and washed, and returned to his own dwelling. The next day, he massaged his body with oil and lay down on the bed. The monks said to him: Venerable Charka, what is your discomfort? Charka said: Venerable ones, I only made a small joke, and such a punishment has befallen me. What did you do? He related the situation in detail. The monks said to him: Are you allowed to intimidate monks? Precisely because it is not allowed, such a punishment has befallen you. Some who are not very concerned about the affairs of monks would scold the monks for intimidating monks. They would throw things, they would speak harshly. The monks reported this matter to the Blessed One. Then, the Blessed One, regarding this event, this origin, this situation, convened the assembly of monks, and so on, just as before. The Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, act knowingly, and so on, also as before. The Buddha, the Blessed One, rebuked the Venerable Charka: Charka, is it true that you intimidate monks? Venerable one, it is true. The Buddha, the Blessed One, rebuked him, saying: This is not the conduct of a renunciate, it is not in accordance, it is not appropriate, it is not in accordance with the rules, this is not something that a renunciate should do. Then, the Blessed One, having rebuked him in various ways, said to the monks: Monks, therefore, having truly seen the ten benefits, the foundation of training should be established in the Vinaya for the hearers, and so on, just as before. My hearers should recite the foundation of training in the Vinaya in this way: If any monk intimidates a monk, or instigates another to intimidate, even if it is only with the intention of joking, he commits an offense entailing expulsion. Any monk, refers to Charka, or anyone else like him. For a monk,
