Having abandoned (defilements), the state of Arhat was realized. At that time, at that moment, the assembly of beings dwelling on that cliff were these very beings dwelling on the cliff now. Because they made such a prayer there, now relying on non-regression, they have come to see the truth in my teachings. Monks, what action did the venerable Non-regression perform that, through the maturation of that action, he came to possess the divine eye? Monks, in the past, in this very auspicious great eon, when the lifespan of beings was 40,000 years, the teacher, the Thus-Gone One, the Arhat, the Perfectly and Fully Awakened One, endowed with knowledge and conduct, the Well-Gone One, the Knower of the World, the unsurpassed guide of beings to be tamed, the teacher of gods and humans, the Buddha, the Bhagavan, named Krakucchanda (Destroyer of the Cycle of Existence), appeared in the world. Having completed all the deeds of a Buddha, he entered the realm of nirvana without remainder, and after completely passing into nirvana, King Krin ordered a stupa made of four kinds of precious jewels to be built for him, one yojana in circumference and half a yojana in height, and he also arranged for a festival to be held for it. When the festival arrived, five hundred people who wanted to subdue thieves came there, and there, the shoes of the leader of the thieves' army were torn. Not far from there was a perfumed chamber, and in it, a lamp was burning dimly. The leader of the thieves' army saw it and entered that perfumed chamber and began to sew his shoes. As the light of the lamp was burning dimly, he stirred the wick of the lamp. The lamp became very bright, and then he saw the image. Having seen the image, he developed great faith and made offerings with clods of earth, and prayed, "By this root of virtue of mine, may I possess the divine eye." Monks, the leader of the thieves' army at that time was this monk Non-regression. Because he stirred the wick of the lamp and generated faith, through the maturation of that action, he came to possess the divine eye. Monks, what action did the venerable Non-regression perform that, through that action

Due to the ripening of karma, the Blessed One has shown the best of those with divine eyes. Monks, this is also due to the power of aspiration. Where was the aspiration made? Monks, in the past, in this very auspicious great kalpa, when the lifespan of beings was twenty thousand years, the teacher, the Thus-Gone One, the Arhat, the Perfectly Awakened One, perfect in knowledge and conduct, the Well-Gone One, the Knower of the World, the unsurpassed guide of beings to be tamed, the teacher of gods and humans, the Buddha, the Blessed One Light-Protector, appeared in the world and dwelt near Varanasi in the Deer Park where the sages speak. In his doctrine, this one having gone forth, whichever monk caused him to go forth, that monk was shown by the Thus-Gone One, the Perfectly Awakened Buddha Light-Protector to be the best of those with divine eyes. Then, while he practiced celibacy for as long as he lived, he did not attain any accumulation of qualities, and then at the time of death, he made this aspiration: 'By me, to the Blessed One, the Thus-Gone One, the Arhat, the Perfectly Awakened Buddha, the unsurpassed object of offerings, Light-Protector, while I lived, I practiced celibacy, but I did not attain any accumulation of qualities. By this root of virtue of practicing celibacy for as long as I lived, may the Blessed One, the Thus-Gone One, the Arhat, the Perfectly Awakened Buddha Light-Protector, to the Brahmin boy, the teacher, 'Brahmin boy, in the future, when the lifespan of beings is a hundred years, the Thus-Gone One, the Arhat, the Perfectly Awakened Buddha, perfect in knowledge and conduct, the Well-Gone One, the Knower of the World, the guide of beings to be tamed, the unsurpassed one, the teacher of gods and humans, the Buddha, the Blessed One, will be called Shakyamuni,' having been definitively prophesied, in his doctrine, may I go forth and, having abandoned all defilements, realize the state of Arhat. Just as this preceptor was shown by the Blessed One, the Thus-Gone One, the Arhat, the Perfectly Awakened Buddha Light-Protector to be the best of those with divine eyes, so may I also be by the Blessed One Shakyamuni, the Lion of the Shakyas, the Shakya
