Then (the Buddha) showed a smile. According to the Dharma, when the Buddhas, the Bhagavad-ones, show a smile, blue, yellow, red, white, madder, crystal, silver, and other rays of light appear from their mouths. Some flow downwards, and some flow upwards. Among them, those that flow downwards flow to the sentient beings in hell, namely, the Reviving Hell, the Black Line Hell, the Crushing Hell, the Crying Hell, the Great Crying Hell, the Hot Hell, the Extremely Hot Hell, the Uninterrupted Hell, the Blistering Hell, the Bursting Blister Hell, the Gnashing Teeth Hell, the Hahava Hell, the Atata Hell, the hells that crack like *utpala* (藏文,梵文天城体उत्पल,梵文罗马拟音utpala,汉语字面意思:青莲花), the hells that crack like lotuses, and the hells that crack like great lotuses. For those sentient beings who are in the hot hells, the light transforms into coolness and descends; for those sentient beings who are in the cold hells, the light transforms into warmth and descends. This light cuts off the various sufferings of those sentient beings, and they think, 'Have we, the virtuous ones, died and transmigrated from here? Or have we been born elsewhere?' They think like this. In order to generate faith in them, the Bhagavad-one manifests emanations. When they see the emanations, they think, 'We, the virtuous ones, have neither died and transmigrated from here, nor have we been born elsewhere, but due to the power of this previously unseen sentient being, our various sufferings have been cut off.' They think like this. They develop great faith in the emanations, thereby exhausting the karma that would cause them to experience the hells, and then they take rebirth among the gods and humans who will become vessels of truth. Those lights that flow upwards flow to the Four Great Kings Heaven, the Thirty-three Heavens, the Yama Heaven, the Tushita Heaven, the Enjoying Emanations Heaven, the Controlling Others' Emanations Heaven, the Brahma Assembly Heaven, the Brahma Retinue Heaven, the Great Brahma Heaven, the Heaven of Limited Light, the Heaven of Immeasurable Light, the Heaven of Clear Light, the Heaven of Limited Virtue, the Heaven of Immeasurable Virtue, the Heaven of Universal Virtue, the Cloudless Heaven, the Heaven of Merit-born, the Heaven of Great Fruit, the Non-afflicted Heaven, the Non-heated Heaven, the Well-appearing Heaven, the Well-seeing Heaven, the Akanishta Heaven, and other heavens.

From there, the sounds of impermanence, suffering, emptiness, and selflessness emanated, and these two verses were composed and arose. Enter the Buddha's teachings, like an elephant entering a reed thicket, destroy the army of the Lord of Death. Whoever is extremely diligent and practices in this Dharma and Discipline, having completely abandoned the cycle of rebirth, will put an end to suffering. These words were also spoken. Then, those rays of light permeated the three-thousand great-thousand world realms and followed the Blessed One like attendants. If the Blessed One wished to prophesy past actions, the light would disappear into the Blessed One's lower garment. If he wished to prophesy future actions, it would disappear in front. If he wished to prophesy that beings would be born in hell, it would disappear into the soles of his feet. If he wished to prophesy that they would be born as animals, it would disappear into his ankles. If he wished to prophesy that they would be born as hungry ghosts, it would disappear into his toes. If he wished to prophesy that they would be born as humans, it would disappear into his knees. If he wished to prophesy the power of a wheel-turning monarch, it would disappear into his left palm. If he wished to prophesy the kingdom of a wheel-turning monarch, it would disappear into his right palm. If he wished to prophesy that they would be born as gods, it would disappear into his navel. If he wished to prophesy the enlightenment of a Hearer, it would disappear into his mouth. If he wished to prophesy the enlightenment of a Solitary Buddha, it would disappear into his brow. If he wished to prophesy the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, it would disappear into his crown protuberance. Then, those rays of light circumambulated the Blessed One three times and disappeared into the Blessed One's brow. Then, the venerable Ānanda, with his palms joined, asked the Blessed One: "Thousands of various colors, brilliant rays of light, have arisen from the edge of the Blessed One's mouth, illuminating all directions, like an unfurled sunshade." He also spoke the verse: "Free from pride, dejection, and excessive conceit, the Buddha is the supreme cause for beings."
