Having settled in one place, the Blessed One truly taught, truly guided, truly praised, and truly delighted the many merchants of Shravasti (Mnyan-yod) with Dharma-related teachings. In various ways, he truly taught with Dharma-related teachings, truly guided, truly praised, and truly delighted them, and then remained silent. Then, many merchants of Shravasti rose from their seats, bared one shoulder, and, with palms joined, bowed towards where the Blessed One was, and said this to the Blessed One: "Blessed One, from Shravasti to Rajagriha (རྒྱལ་པོའི་ཁབ།), how much would you allow us to offer the Sangha of monks robes, food, lodging, medicine, and medical supplies?" The Blessed One did not speak to the many merchants of Shravasti, which meant he allowed it. Then, the many merchants of Shravasti, realizing that the Blessed One's silence meant allowance, were overjoyed and rejoiced at the Blessed One's permission. They bowed their heads to the Blessed One's feet and then departed from the Blessed One's presence. Then, the many merchants of Shravasti went to where the venerable Ananda (ཀུན་དགའ་བོ།) was, and upon arriving, bowed their heads to the venerable Ananda's feet and sat down to one side. Having sat down to one side, the many merchants of Shravasti said this to the venerable Ananda: "Venerable Ananda, where will the Blessed One go after leaving? Wise ones, it is like a Chakravartin king. Venerable Ananda, how far does a Chakravartin king travel? Wise ones, a Chakravartin king travels ten yojanas on the road. They will prepare gatherings for the Blessed One and the Sangha of monks every ten yojanas. Whatever cold food there is, they will prepare it on the same day, and whatever hot food there is, they will prepare it each day.

Endowed with the ten powers, the four fearlessnesses, the three unmixed mindfulnesses, and endowed with great compassion, as well as the great assembly of hearers such as Ajnata Kaundinya, Ashvajit, Bhadrika, Vashpa, Mahanama, Yashas, Purna, Vimala, Gavampati, and Subahu. Furthermore, surrounded and attended by a very large community of monks, he traveled and departed in various places in Rajagriha. The venerable Ananda went to the place of agreement, and when he saw the rock on the road, he stayed there until the Blessed One had departed. After the Blessed One had departed, the Blessed One said: Ananda, why do you stay? Venerable one, this is a dangerous rocky path. This path is straight and has the fear of lions. This path is crooked and comfortable, so which path should I take? Ananda, go by the straight path, for the Thus-Gone One is free from the fear of lions. Then the Blessed One began to depart from the straight path, and when he came to a rocky mountain on that road, two boys came along the road from the rocky mountain, playing and staying. One of them was holding a drum (Sanskrit: paṭaha, Romanized Sanskrit: paṭaha, Tibetan: རྔ་པ་ཊ་ཧ་, literal meaning: drum), and the other was holding a bow. When the two of them saw the Blessed One, they said this: Blessed One, please come here. Blessed One, welcome. Blessed One, where are you going to a place of fear? However, Blessed One, please do not be afraid. We two will protect the Blessed One. At that time, one who had faith struck the drum (Sanskrit: paṭaha, Romanized Sanskrit: paṭaha, Tibetan: རྔ་པ་ཊ་ཧ་, literal meaning: drum), and the other who had faith drew the bow, and the two of them began to go before the Blessed One. The Blessed One thought: May the roots of virtue of these two boys be increased. The Blessed One said to the two boys: Two boys, go back! The Thus-Gone One is free from the fear of lions. The two of them bowed their heads to the two feet of the Blessed One and departed from before the Blessed One, the Blessed One.
