Furthermore, what is meant by "bhikshu"? It refers to the son of the Shakya, Nanda, or anyone else of that nature. The phrase "seeking faults, determined to find fault with this bhikshu" means with the intention of causing this bhikshu to be deprived of food. The phrase "having made that the cause" means nothing other than that. The phrase "to the bhikshu" refers to the follower of this Dharma. The phrase "saying thus" means having spoken thus. The phrase "O venerable one, come here, go to the houses" refers to the houses of Brahmins and householders. The phrase "there you will receive provisions and food as alms" refers to the five provisions and five foods. The phrase "let them give as much as you desire," speaking thus, means how much is enough. If he does not allow giving to him, and after that says, "Venerable one, it is not comfortable for me to speak or stay with you. It is comfortable for me to speak or stay alone like this, you go," saying thus, means saying so. The phrase "an offense" means burning, roasting, and causing to fall into sentient being hells, animals, hungry ghosts, evil destinies, bad paths, and wrong falls. Furthermore, as long as that offense is not confessed and not individually confessed, it obscures virtuous dharmas, therefore it is said to be an offense. How does it become an offense? If a bhikshu intentionally causes a bhikshu to be deprived of food, it becomes an offense in all cases. There is no offense in causing it to be done for a sick person or causing a doctor to instruct. There is no offense for a beginner, one who is mad, one whose mind is disturbed, and one who is afflicted by feelings. The offense of causing deprivation of food, this fifty-first, is complete. The Buddha, the Bhagavan, was staying at Anathapindika's grove in Jeta's Grove in Shravasti. Then, many merchants from Shravasti went to where the Bhagavan was, and having gone, bowed their heads at the feet of the Bhagavan and sat on one side. Having sat on one side, the Bhagavan gave a Dharma-related teaching to the many merchants from Shravasti.

He showed it correctly, guided it correctly, praised it correctly, and made it very happy correctly. In various ways, with teachings in accordance with the Dharma, he showed it correctly, guided it correctly, praised it correctly, and made it very happy, and then he said nothing more. Then, many merchants of Shravasti were very pleased and rejoiced at the words spoken by the Blessed One, and they bowed their heads at the feet of the Blessed One, and from before the Blessed One, they went directly to where the Venerable Ananda was, and bowed their heads at the feet of the Venerable Ananda, and then sat down on one side. After sitting down on one side, the Venerable Ananda, with speech in accordance with the Dharma, correctly showed, guided, praised, and made very happy the many merchants of Shravasti. In various ways, with speech in accordance with the Dharma, he showed it correctly, guided it correctly, praised it correctly, and made it very happy, and then he said nothing more. Then, many merchants of Shravasti rose from their seats, placed their robes on one shoulder, and, with palms joined together, turned to where the Venerable Ananda was, and said to the Venerable Ananda: Venerable Ananda, where will the Blessed One go after promising to observe the rainy season retreat? Wise ones, please inform the Buddha, the Blessed One! Venerable Ananda, the Buddha, the Blessed One, is difficult to approach and difficult to endure, so we cannot inform the Buddha, the Blessed One. Wise ones, for me also, the Buddha, the Blessed One, is difficult to approach and difficult to endure, so I also cannot inform the Buddha, the Blessed One. Venerable Ananda, if the Venerable Ananda also finds the Buddha, the Blessed One, difficult to approach and difficult to endure, and the Venerable Ananda also finds it inconvenient to inform the Buddha, the Blessed One, then can the Venerable Ananda, through signs or teachings, know where the Blessed One has promised to observe the rainy season retreat?

How does one know that he has accepted and will go to a certain direction? How does one know through signs? How does one know through conversation? Wise ones, the Blessed One, having accepted to stay for the summer, the Blessed One would look at and stay in the direction he intended to go, and would also praise those places. Venerable Ananda, where did the Blessed One look and stay? And whom did he praise? Wise ones, the Blessed One looked and stayed in Magadha, and praised the people of Rajagriha. Having heard what the venerable Ananda said, they were very happy and rejoiced, and bowed to the two feet of the venerable Ananda with their heads, and then they thought in their hearts: The Blessed One, having accepted to stay for the summer, will go to Rajagriha. So they prepared goods to go to Rajagriha. Then, the Blessed One, having accepted to stay for the summer, after the three summer months had passed, the Blessed One said to the venerable Ananda: Ananda, go and tell the monks, the Tathagata will go to Magadha for touring, whoever among you is willing to go to Magadha for touring with the Tathagata, do the work of sewing robes. The venerable Ananda replied: Venerable, as you command. Having heard from the Blessed One, he said to the monks: Venerable ones, the Tathagata will go to Magadha for touring, whoever among you is willing to go to Magadha for touring with the Tathagata, do the work of sewing robes. The merchants of Shravasti heard the venerable Ananda saying to the monks: Venerable ones, the Tathagata will go to Magadha for touring, whoever among you is willing to go to Magadha for touring with the Tathagata, do the work of sewing robes. Having heard this, they went to where the Blessed One was, and having arrived, they bowed to the two feet of the Blessed One with their heads, and then withdrew to one side.
