The term "thus" means to instruct with rebuke as previously demonstrated. The phrase "when the monks instruct that novice thus" refers to the time of instructing with rebuke. The phrase "if he abandons that basis" means to completely abandon that form of view. The phrase "that is good" means that is good. The phrase "if he does not abandon" means not abandoning it completely. He should be truly instructed and truly shown two or three times, which means to instruct with solicitation and the four karmas as previously demonstrated. Truly instructing is that, and truly showing is that. The phrase "to that novice" refers to thorns and great ones. The phrase "the monks" refers to those who uphold this Dharma. From now on, novice, do not say that the Bhagavan, the Tathagata, the Arhat, the perfectly complete Buddha is the teacher, nor should you follow any wise person who practices the same Brahma, a guru-like place, or anything else. Whatever authority the monks and novices have to sleep together in the same place up to two sunsets, from now on you do not have that authority. Foolish one, you are expelled, go elsewhere. This should be the instruction, which means to expel with solicitation and the four karmas as previously demonstrated. Furthermore, the phrase "any monk" refers to the son of Shakya, Nanda, or anyone else like him. The phrase "knowingly" means that he himself knows it, or it is spoken by others. The phrase "a novice expelled in this way" refers to thorns and great ones as they are. The phrase "gives a dwelling" means giving a place to stay. The phrase "gives support" means giving a bowl, Dharma robes, a water strainer, a bowl, a belt, a needle case, reading, recitation, and giving questions.

All that is surrounded by wood are dwellings, cloisters, and multi-storied buildings. What is completely covered and mostly surrounded are ten-doored and twelve-doored structures. What is mostly covered and completely surrounded are four-sided cloisters. What is mostly covered and mostly surrounded are three-sided cloisters and surrounding cloisters. What is called a 'lapse' is that which burns, cooks, and causes beings to fall into hells, animals, hungry ghosts, evil destinies, bad migrations, and wrong views. Furthermore, as long as that lapse is not confessed and individually atoned for, it obstructs virtuous dharmas. Therefore, it is called a 'lapse.' How does one fall into a lapse? If a bhikshu, knowing even a little, still allows an expelled novice to be near, it becomes a lapse. If he closely supports him, it becomes a lapse. If he sleeps with him in the same place, it becomes a lapse. There is no lapse for one who wishes to separate from sickness and sinful views. There is no lapse for a beginner, one who is mad, one who is mentally disturbed, or one who is afflicted by feelings. The fifty-seventh lapse, which compiles the expulsion [of a novice], is complete. The Buddha, the Bhagavan, was dwelling in Rajagriha, in the grove of light, in the place of Kalandaka. In Rajagriha, there were two Naga kings named Mountain and Delightful. Through the power of these two, the five hundred hot springs, rivers, lakes, and ponds of Rajagriha were filled with streams of water at all times, and the crops were exceedingly abundant. When the Bhagavan subdued the Naga kings Nanda and Upananda, those two would come to the terraces of Mount Sumeru on the eighth, fourteenth, and fifteenth of each month to serve the Bhagavan. Then, the Naga kings Mountain and Delightful thought to themselves: 'If the Naga kings Nanda and Upananda come to the terraces of Mount Sumeru on the eighth, fourteenth, and fifteenth of each month to serve the Bhagavan, then we two, dwelling here, [should also serve] the Bhagavan.'

Without serving, they thought they should go to serve the Blessed One. Then, the two dragon kings, Mountain and Delightful, went to where the Blessed One was, and after arriving, they bowed their heads at the feet of the Blessed One and sat down on one side. After sitting down on one side, the Blessed One guided the two dragon kings, Mountain and Delightful, to take refuge and established them in the precepts. When the Blessed One guided the two to take refuge and established them in the precepts, their bodies and possessions became very prominent. When their bodies and possessions became very prominent, they thought they should enter the great ocean. So, they went to where the Blessed One was, and after arriving, they bowed their heads at the feet of the Blessed One and sat down on one side. After sitting down on one side, the two dragon kings, Mountain and Delightful, said to the Blessed One: Venerable Blessed One, when the Blessed One guided us two to take refuge and established us in the precepts, our bodies and possessions became very prominent, so if the Blessed One allows, we two will enter the great ocean. The Blessed One said: Dragon kings, you two are the kings who appeared in Magadha, living in the land of Skillful Form Essence, so go and report to the king who appeared in Magadha, Skillful Form Essence. The two thought, in reality, the Blessed One is not allowing us two to enter the great ocean. When the two served the Blessed One at night, they served in the form of immeasurable palaces, and when they served the Blessed One during the day, they served in the form of householders. Then, the king who appeared in Magadha, Skillful Form Essence, went to the residence of Kalanda in the Bright Garden. Because the royal family is one with prominent pride, that king
