Near-Joy said: If two nights are permissible, then three nights are also permissible. Does the third night drink alcohol? Does it eat garlic? What is the fault? A few monks rebuked, saying: The Blessed One has taught that a monk should not sleep in one place for more than two nights with someone who has not received full ordination, why do the monks deliberately exceed two nights? They rebuked, reproached, and insulted. At that time, the monks reported to the Blessed One. Then, the Blessed One, because of this event, because of this origin, because of this occasion, gathered the monastic community of monks, etc., as before. The Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, knowingly commit offenses, etc., also as before. The Buddha, the Blessed One, rebuked Near-Joy, saying: Near-Joy, I have said that a monk should not sleep in one place for more than two nights with someone who has not received full ordination, is it true that you deliberately exceed two nights? Venerable, yes. The Buddha, the Blessed One, rebuked, saying: This is not the conduct of a renunciate, it is not in accordance, it is not proper, it is not in accordance with the rules, this is not what a renunciate should do. Then, after the Blessed One rebuked in various ways, he instructed the monks: Monks, therefore, seeing the ten benefits accurately, establish the basis of training for the hearers in the Vinaya.
