Therefore, a bhikshu should not sleep with someone who has not received full ordination, nor should he sleep in the open. If he sleeps, he commits a serious offense. This is temporary, as the Buddha, the Bhagavan, does not yet establish the basis of training for the Shravakas in order to tame them. The Venerable Shariputra had two novices named Sound Steadfast and Encourager. Once, an unexpected bhikshu arrived, and the Venerable Sound Steadfast had gone out for the day. He assigned the unexpected bhikshu to the Venerable Sound Steadfast's dwelling. That bhikshu took the Venerable Sound Steadfast's bowl and robes outside and placed them to one side. When the Venerable Sound Steadfast returned from his day's activities and saw his bowl and robes taken outside and placed to one side, he was displeased. The novice Encourager came and said: Venerable Sound Steadfast, why are you displeased? Sound Steadfast said: I went out for the day, and the dwelling was assigned to an unexpected bhikshu, who took my bowl and robes outside and placed them to one side. Now that five-colored clouds have gathered, I do not know where to set up my bedding. Encourager said: Venerable Sound Steadfast, why are you displeased? Just sleep anywhere! Sound Steadfast said: Venerable Encourager, you have great magical powers and can conjure up a hut made of non-leaves to set up bedding, but what should I do? At that time, Brahmins and faithful householders had smeared the Bhagavan's excrement site with fragrant substances. The Venerable Sound Steadfast thought: The place where the Buddha, the Bhagavan, untimely defecates is neither a place to go nor an appropriate time, so I should go and sleep there! So he went there and laid his head on the base of the excrement site and slept. That night, five-colored clouds gathered and began to rain, and then

Not far from that place, there was a nest of a snake that quickly spreads its venom, filled with rainwater. That snake that quickly spreads its venom climbed onto the Blessed One's outer robe. Because the Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, have the nature of not forgetting, the Blessed One thought: 'If this snake that quickly spreads its venom were to bite Sound-endowed Youth, he would be reduced to just a name.' Those arrogant Shakyas would say, 'If the young Sound-endowed Youth had not become a renunciate, he would have become a powerful king. But after he became a renunciate, he died without care, which would give the non-believers an opportunity.' Having understood this, the Blessed One stretched out his hand like an elephant's trunk, picked up Sound-endowed Youth, and laid him down on his own sleeping mat. It is not appropriate or fitting for the Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, to sleep in the same place with someone who has not fully taken the monastic vows. Therefore, the Blessed One spent most of the night walking and sitting in the sky. The monks, the venerable residents, got up early the next morning and came to bow their heads at the feet of the Blessed One. The nature of the Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, is that if they wish to establish the basis of training for the hearers in the Vinaya, they will accept future monks, but they will not send away the monks who have already come. Then, the venerable Encourager went to bow his head at the feet of the Blessed One, and when he saw the venerable Sound-endowed Youth sleeping on the Blessed One's sleeping mat, he woke up the venerable Sound-endowed Youth with the sound of a cymbal and said: 'Venerable Sound-endowed Youth, where are you sleeping?' When he woke up and saw himself sleeping on the Blessed One's sleeping mat, he quickly got up and came down from the Blessed One's sleeping mat. The Encourager said: 'Venerable Sound-endowed Youth, if the Blessed One had not cared for you, you would have been bitten by that snake that quickly spreads its venom, and you would have been reduced to just a name.'

Then the Blessed One addressed the monks, saying: "Monks, these novices have neither mother nor father, nor any other assembly of loving friends. You alone are their companions in the pure life. These are endowed with the potential for arahantship. If you do not care for them completely, who else will? Therefore, monks, I allow you to sleep in the same dwelling with those who have not yet received full ordination, for up to two nights. A monk had dysentery, and when he defecated in the dark, his feet were soiled. He stretched out his legs and lay down. Next to him was a monk who had previously stayed with him. Attendants came and asked, 'Venerable, are you comfortable?' He said, 'No.' 'How are you uncomfortable?' He explained the situation in detail. The monks reported this to the Blessed One. The Blessed One said, 'Therefore, let there be light.' When there was light, he did not lie down because of remorse, thinking it was a fault. The Blessed One said, 'He should lie down, and not feel remorse for this.' The monks attending the sick did not lie down because of remorse, and they became ill. The Blessed One said, 'They should also lie down.' There, because of the need to give and receive, something happened. The Blessed One said, 'Even those who have not received full ordination should lie down there.' When they were taken out after two nights, it harmed the sick person. The Blessed One said, 'They should lie down even on the third night.' The sick person felt remorse. The Blessed One said, 'He should not feel remorse for this, he should lie down.' The attendants caring for the sick did not lie down because of remorse. The Blessed One said, 'He should lie down and not feel remorse for this.' The elder monks became ill, and they could not stand up and give and receive food themselves. The Blessed One said, 'Their attendants should wash their hands, give and receive food, and then sit together and eat. Even if their attendants are young, they should eat in the same way. Those who have received full ordination.'
