made various reproaches. Then, the Blessed One praised diligence, effort, and acting after examination, and then said to the monks: Monks, therefore, you should truly see the ten benefits, thereby establishing the training ground for the hearers in the Vinaya, etc., as before. My hearers should recite the training ground in the Vinaya as follows: If any monk accumulates food and drink and then eats, he commits a downfall. The term "any monk" refers to the venerable Kālaka, or anyone else like him. "Food and drink" refers to the five foods and the five drinks. The term "accumulation" refers to two kinds of accumulation: accepting offerings in the morning and accumulating them until the afternoon, and accepting offerings in the afternoon and accumulating them past the mealtime. The term "eating" refers to swallowing into the throat. The term "downfall" refers to burning, roasting, and falling into sentient hells, animals, hungry ghosts, evil destinies, bad paths, and wrong views. Furthermore, if this downfall is not confessed and individually confessed, it will obstruct virtuous dharmas. Therefore, the Buddha said that this is a downfall. So, how does it become a downfall? If a monk thinks that he has accumulated food and drink and then eats, he commits a downfall. If a monk hesitates about the accumulated food and drink and then eats, he commits a downfall. If a monk thinks that he has not accumulated food and drink and then eats, he commits a minor offense. If a monk hesitates about the unaccumulated food and drink and then eats, he commits a minor offense. If a monk accumulates a bowl, a small bowl, a cup, an eating vessel, a salt bag, a container for the bowl, clothes, a mirror, a bed, a small bed, a water pot, a bottle, pills, a key, and a crooked key, and then eats contaminated food, he commits a minor offense in all cases. A monk accumulates

Taking or eating with a mouth that has been stored and hands that have been stored will result in a misdeed. If a monk stores flowers and fruits, and eats the flowers and fruits that have been stored for however long, it will constitute a downfall in all cases. If a monk drinks a beverage without rinsing his mouth, it will result in a misdeed. There is no downfall for a beginner, one who is insane, one who is mentally disturbed, or one who is endangered by feelings. The thirty-eighth downfall regarding storage is complete. The Buddha, the Bhagavan, was dwelling in Jetavana in Anathapindika's Grove in Shravasti. The venerable Mahākāla was always associated with the charnel ground. His alms bowl was also from the charnel ground, his robes were from the charnel ground, his alms were from the charnel ground, and his dwelling was also in the charnel ground. How was his alms bowl from the charnel ground? It was like this: relatives would throw broken clay pots of the dead who had passed away into the charnel ground. The venerable Mahākāla would scrape off the edges of the broken pots, burn them, consecrate them as alms bowls, and carry them. Thus, his alms bowl was from the charnel ground. How were his robes from the charnel ground? It was like this: relatives would throw away the clothes of the dead who had passed away into the charnel ground. The venerable Mahākāla would wash, sew, and dye them, consecrate them as robes, and wear them. Thus, his robes were from the charnel ground. How were his alms from the charnel ground? It was like this: relatives would throw the five kinds of food of the dead who had passed away into the charnel ground. The venerable Mahākāla would take them and eat them. Thus, his alms were from the charnel ground. How was his dwelling in the charnel ground? It was like this: the venerable Mahākāla would dwell in the charnel ground. Thus, his dwelling was in the charnel ground. When most people developed aversion towards him, the venerable Mahākāla's body, skin, flesh, and blood became full, and he would no longer frequently enter the village for alms. When most people did not develop aversion towards him,

At that time, the venerable Mahākāla became emaciated, weak, thin-necked, dry, and without a body. And again and again, he would go to the village for alms. Taking that doorkeeper as a sign, (thinking) when this noble Mahākāla becomes disgusting to most people, at that time his life, skin, flesh, and blood become full, and he does not go to the village for alms again and again. When he becomes not disgusting to most people, at that time this noble Mahākāla becomes emaciated, weak, thin-necked, dry, and without a body, and he goes to the village for alms again and again, so I think, is this noble Mahākāla eating human flesh? Everywhere, the sound that the noble Mahākāla eats human flesh was heard. In Shravasti, there was a Brahmin who took a wife from the same caste, and he played with her, rejoiced, and enjoyed happiness. Playing, rejoicing, and enjoying happiness, they had a daughter who was raised and grew up to be very beautiful. At another time, that Brahmin died, and relatives decorated the hearse with blue, yellow, red, and white cloths, carried it to the cemetery, and cremated it. His wife and daughter sat on one side in sorrow, looking at the face of the venerable Mahākāla. The daughter saw the venerable Mahākāla looking, looking at her face. Having seen it, she said to her mother: Mother, this noble Mahākāla is certainly spying, like a blind crow. Then, the Blessed One told the monks: Monks, a Brahmin's daughter said something, and came close to saying something. She spoke harsh words to a great Shravaka like Mount Sumeru, so that Brahmin's daughter will become a blind crow for five hundred lifetimes. Everywhere, the sound that the Blessed One prophesied that the Brahmin's daughter would become a blind crow for five hundred lifetimes was heard. That Brahmin woman (thought) the Blessed One said that my daughter would become a blind crow for five hundred lifetimes.
