It obscures the grounds, therefore it is said to be a downfall. How does it become a downfall? If a monk begs without being ill and eats without being ill, then begging becomes a misdeed, and eating becomes a downfall. If a monk begs without being ill and eats when ill, then begging becomes a misdeed, but eating is not a downfall. If a monk begs when ill and eats without being ill, then begging is not a downfall, but eating becomes a downfall. If a monk begs when ill and eats when ill, then neither is a downfall. When a monk goes on alms rounds and goes to various houses, if he takes food from a woman's place and comes out, and the monk remains silent, and the woman says, 'What does the venerable one want?' he should state what he wants, and there is no downfall in begging for what he wants. There is no downfall in whatever the patron does as he pleases. When giving yogurt, there is no downfall in asking for water and whey. There is no downfall for a beginner, a madman, a disturbed person, or one who is afflicted by feelings. The fortieth downfall of begging for alms is complete. The fourth group, the category of eating repeatedly, etc.
