He sat on the prepared seat before the Saṃgha of monks. Then, Śākya-míng, knowing that the Saṃgha of monks, including the Buddha, was dwelling in comfort, satisfied and strengthened them with pure and blessed food from his own hands. Having satisfied and strengthened them with various kinds of pure and blessed food from his own hands, and knowing that the Blessed One had finished his meal, put away his bowl, and placed it down, he took the lowest seat and sat before the Blessed One to listen to the Dharma. Then, the Blessed One taught Śākya-míng with a Dharma-related discourse, causing him to understand correctly, to grasp correctly, to rejoice correctly, and to be exceedingly pleased. Having taught him with various kinds of Dharma-related discourse, causing him to understand correctly, to grasp correctly, to rejoice correctly, and to be exceedingly pleased, he rose from his seat and departed. Then, Śākya-míng followed the Blessed One for a while, bowed his head to the Blessed One's feet, circumambulated the Blessed One three times, and then retreated from the Blessed One's presence. On the foundation of the upper mansion, he meditated on the recollection of generosity. Those who lived on yogurt also prepared his dwelling and collected food. The group of six said, "Friend, near friend, the time for the meal has arrived. If the food is insufficient, it will not be good." So they instructed those who went to the houses to beg for food to prepare sixty portions of food and send them to Śākya-míng's house. However, when they arrived, they saw that no food had been prepared and no dwelling had been arranged. The group of six said to those who lived on yogurt, "Wise ones, having invited the Saṃgha of monks, including the Buddha, you are so stingy that you neither prepare the meal nor arrange the dwelling. Are you going to cut off the meal for the Saṃgha of monks, including the Buddha?" They said, "Noble ones, have you fallen asleep? The Saṃgha of monks, including the Buddha, has already finished the meal and departed."

The group of six said: Should we fast? They said: Venerable ones, please wait a moment at Shakya Mingchen's place. They went to Shakya Mingchen and said: Venerable group of six have now arrived, they are not begging for alms. Shakya Mingchen said: Give them whatever little food is left today. They went there and said: Venerable ones, please sit down and enjoy. As they began to distribute the food, the group of six said: Shakya Mingchen said in a very loud voice, will the Blessed One allow me to offer a meal to the Sangha at my house tomorrow? If they invite the Buddha and the Sangha, if the Buddha and the Sangha can be invited with such food, then Nanda could invite the Buddha and the Sangha every day. Like this, what does this poor person have? Today, get milk from so-and-so's house, get yogurt from so-and-so's house, get butter from so-and-so's house, get fish from so-and-so's house, get meat from so-and-so's house, get dried meat from so-and-so's house. They begged for food for themselves, like that they begged from other people's houses, ate there, and went to the temple. The monks said to them: Venerable ones, where did you eat? Right there. We didn't see you there. The group of six said: We came later. What kind of food did you eat? The group of six said: Milk, yogurt, butter, fish, meat, and dried meat. The monks said: We didn't get such food. The group of six said: Where does that poor person have such food? We begged from the houses of those who go from house to house, and ate there. Is it okay for you to beg for food for yourselves, like that, from other people's houses and eat it? Maybe it's okay, maybe it's not okay, are we going to starve to death? Why do the few monks...

For one's own sake, begging for such fine food from other people's homes and eating it will be scolded, ridiculed, and mocked. At that time, the monks reported to the Blessed One. Then, because of this incident, this origin, this occasion, the Blessed One convened the monastic community of monks, and so on, just as before. The Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, knowingly commit mistakes, and so on, also as before. The Buddha, the Blessed One, rebuked the group of six monks: Monks, what I have said about the food of monks is this: milk, yogurt, butter, fish, meat, dried meat, etc. Is it true that you begged for such fine food from other people's homes and ate it for your own sake? Venerable, yes. The Buddha, the Blessed One, rebuked them, saying, this is not the conduct of a renunciant, it is not in accordance, it is not proper, it is not in accordance with the rules, a renunciant should not do such a thing. Then, after rebuking them in various ways, the Blessed One said to the monks: Monks, therefore, having seen ten benefits, one should establish the basis of learning for the disciples who are to be tamed, and so on, just as before. My disciples who are to be tamed should recite the basis of learning for taming in this way: The food of monks spoken of by the Blessed One is this: milk, yogurt, butter, fish, meat, dried meat, etc. Also, monks, do you beg for such fine food from other people's homes and eat it for your own sake? If you eat it, you commit a transgression. In this way, the Blessed One established the basis of learning for the disciples who are to be tamed. A sick monk asked the doctor: Virtuous one, please prescribe medicine for me. Venerable, please drink milk. Virtuous one, who will give me milk? Venerable, beg from other people's homes. Virtuous one, the Blessed One has established the basis of learning. Venerable, your teacher is compassionate, therefore, taking that as a cause, it will be permitted.
