Chapter Four, Section on Repeated Eating, etc. Chapter Four, Section on Repeated Eating, etc. Summary Verse: Repeatedly and the same dwelling place, bran and food and strength, gathering and non-time, etc., placing, swallowing from the mouth and merit. The Blessed One Buddha was dwelling in Rajagriha (Royal City, located in present-day Bihar, India), in the grove of light, at the place of Kalandaka. The conduct of the Venerable Shariputra and the great Maudgalyayana was that from time to time they would travel through the hells of sentient beings, travel through the animal realm, travel through the realm of pretas, travel through the realm of gods, and travel through the realm of humans. Having passed through these realms, they would come to Jambudvipa and, for the four assemblies, would describe the suffering of sentient beings in the hells, such as digging, cutting, severing, and splitting; the suffering of animals, such as devouring one another; the suffering of pretas, such as hunger and thirst; the suffering of gods, such as death, falling, scattering, and destruction; and the suffering of humans, such as seeking and attachment. Because of describing these things, some people disliked living together and disliked engaging in pure conduct. They were led by them to where the Venerable Shariputra and the great Maudgalyayana were. Having arrived, the Venerable Shariputra and the great Maudgalyayana would correctly instruct them and correctly reveal to them. The Venerable Shariputra and the great Maudgalyayana would also correctly instruct them and correctly reveal to them. After the Venerable Shariputra and the great Maudgalyayana had correctly instructed and correctly revealed, they delighted in pure conduct and also made efforts to think about the distinctions above. At that time, the Venerable Shariputra and the great Maudgalyayana were surrounded by the four assemblies and sat down. Then, the Blessed One spoke to the Venerable Ananda: Ananda, who makes the monks Shariputra and Maudgalyayana to the four assemblies...

What are the causes and conditions that lead to the Venerable Shariputra and the great Maudgalyayana being surrounded and attended by the assembly? Their practice is to frequently travel to the realms of hell, animals, hungry ghosts, gods, and humans. Through these paths, they reach Jambudvipa, and for the four assemblies, they speak of the sufferings of hell beings, such as digging, cutting, severing, and driving away; the sufferings of animals, such as devouring each other; the sufferings of hungry ghosts, such as hunger and thirst; the sufferings of gods, such as death, falling, scattering, and destruction; and the sufferings of humans, such as searching and attachment. For those who are not pleased with living together and practicing celibacy, they lead them to where the Venerable Shariputra and the great Maudgalyayana are. Upon arrival, they encourage the Venerable Shariputra and the great Maudgalyayana to truly admonish and instruct them. The Venerable Shariputra and the great Maudgalyayana also truly admonish and instruct them. When the Venerable Shariputra and the great Maudgalyayana truly admonish and instruct them, these people will be pleased with celibacy and further contemplate its excellence. Therefore, the causes and conditions for the Venerable Shariputra and the great Maudgalyayana being surrounded by the four assemblies are these. Ananda, because there will not appear people like the monks Shariputra and the great Maudgalyayana, it is permitted to draw a five-part wheel in the gatehouse. The Blessed One instructed that a five-part wheel should be drawn in the gatehouse. The monks followed
