How many karshapanas would make the offering of a parasol to the Buddha and the Sangha of monks even more excellent? The well-favored (one) with five hundred karshapanas (offered). Venerable one, this is useful, he said, and prostrated at the feet of that monk, then went to his own home and said these words to his mother: Mother, today I went to the Grove of Light, and there I saw a wheel of five parts painted. There were painted the five realms of beings, namely hell beings, animals, pretas, gods, and humans. Mother, do you wish that I (your wicked son) be born in the realm of the gods? Son, I wish that all beings be born in the realm of the gods, let alone you! Mother, please give me five hundred karshapanas, and I will offer a parasol to the Buddha and the Sangha of monks. Son, you are also one whom I have raised and nourished with the strength of relatives and the strength of my hands, where would I have the wealth of five hundred karshapanas? Mother, I will go to work for wages. Son, you are still very young, you cannot work for wages. Mother, it is useful. Knowing that this was (the child) asking, she agreed. That child went to the street of laborers and sat there. Brahmins and householders took other laborers, but no one took him. He stayed there until the sun set and it was dark, and then he came home. His mother saw him and asked: Son, did you work for wages today? The child said: Mother, no one took me. Son, laborers are not like this. Laborers have disheveled hair and wear dirty clothes, and then they go to the street of laborers and sit. If you also want to work for wages, dishevel your hair, put on dirty clothes, and then go to the street of laborers and sit. The next day, he disheveled his hair, put on dirty clothes, and then went to the street of laborers and sat. A merchant who was building a house came to the street of laborers to hire workers. He took the other laborers, but did not take the child. The child said: Father, I also work for wages.

Said. Child, you are too young, you cannot work for wages. The child said: Will you give me wages first? The merchant said: Wages will be given at the end. The child said: I will work today, if you are satisfied, give me wages. That merchant took the child away, and the child started working in that merchant's house for wages. When the other hired workers were cooking, that child worked quickly, and they said to him: Nephew, why don't you cook? The child said: Uncles, I used to behave badly, so I was born in poor families, and therefore I am now working for wages. If I cook now, what will happen to the destination of those who die from here? They said: Nephew, you are new here, so everything will eventually become a place of work. That child was proficient in worldly stories, so he told stories to those hired workers and walked away quickly. Those hired workers were also afraid of not hearing the stories, so they quickly followed him, and that day those hired workers did a lot of work. The householder's daily behavior is: After eating, he checks all the endings of the work one by one, so that merchant, after returning at noon, checks all the endings of the work one by one. When he saw that the workload was twice as much as usual, he asked the foreman: Did you hire other hired workers again? He said he didn't hire. The merchant said: Then why has the workload increased today? He said: The householder's son, may he be free from illness. He is proficient in worldly stories. He tells worldly stories and works quickly, and the other hired workers are also afraid of not hearing the stories, so they quickly follow him and work, therefore the workload has increased today. That merchant started to give that child double wages, and the child said: What? Are you going to give me two wages at once? No, like this.

The old man gives a reward because he likes you. The child said: If you like me, then while I take care of your garden, please put my wages in your hand. The merchant said: Let it be so. When the work at his house was finished, calculating the wages of that child, it was not enough for five hundred karshapanas, and that child began to cry. That merchant said: Child, why are you crying? I didn't deceive you, did I? Father, you are a great man, how could you deceive me? Like this, I worked for the wages of five hundred karshapanas, offering food to the Buddha and the Sangha of monks. I thought I could be reborn among the gods, but these cannot be achieved, then I will have to do other things for wages. That merchant was a faithful person, so he said: Child, I will make up for it. Father, will I not be able to be reborn among the gods? Child, do you have strong faith in the Bhagavan? I have strong faith. Go and ask the Bhagavan. That child went to where the Bhagavan was, and after arriving, bowed to the feet of the Bhagavan with his head, and then sat aside. After sitting aside, the son of that householder said to the Bhagavan: Bhagavan, I worked in the garden of a certain merchant for the wages of five hundred karshapanas, but those cannot be achieved, if that merchant wants to make up for those, can I accept it? Well done, go and take it, that merchant is a faithful person. Bhagavan, will I not be able to be reborn among the gods? You will be reborn. That child bowed to the feet of the Bhagavan with his head and left. Afterwards, the son of that householder took five hundred karshapanas from that merchant, returned to his mother and said: Mother, use these five hundred karshapanas to prepare food, and offer food to the Buddha and the Sangha of monks. Child, I don't have any utensils, nor servants, nor a dwelling, so ask that merchant for utensils, servants, and a dwelling.
