The conduct is that, wherever one dwells near a village or town, in the morning one puts on the lower garment, takes the alms bowl and Dharma robes, and in that village or town, with body very guarded, senses very subdued, and mindfulness very attentive, one engages in alms-seeking. If one obtains wet rice, one receives it with the alms bowl. If one obtains dry rice, one receives it with the container of the alms bowl. Having completed alms-seeking in that village or town, one goes to the monastery, eats the wet rice, dries the dry rice, fills a new earthenware pot and stores it. When wind rises, or famine occurs, or rain falls, or a storm arises, at such times of wind rising, famine occurring, rain falling, or a storm arising, one soaks the dry rice with warm water and eats it, thereby experiencing the bliss of meditative concentration, liberation, and samadhi. The nature of the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, when living, dwelling, and existing, is that, out of compassion for those who are to be tamed, they go to the realms of hell-beings, animals, pretas, gods, lands, rivers, mountains, cemeteries, and monasteries. Therefore, the Buddha, the Bhagavat, wishing to go to the monastery, spoke to the venerable Ānanda: "Ānanda, go and tell the monks, 'Monks, the Tathāgata is going to the monastery; whoever among you is willing to go to the monastery together with the Tathāgata, take up your Dharma robes.'" The venerable Ānanda replied, "Venerable One, as you command." Having heard this from the Bhagavat, he said to the monks, "Venerable ones, the Bhagavat is going to the monastery; whoever among you is willing to go to the monastery together with the Tathāgata, take up your Dharma robes." Then, the Bhagavat, surrounded by the assembly of monks, the monastic community of monks

Then, sweeping forward, he went to the monastery. The Blessed One arrived at the monastery of the Venerable Black. At that time, the Venerable Black had spread out a great deal of dried rice in the monastery. The Blessed One saw the Venerable Black spreading out a great deal of dried rice in the monastery. Having seen this, he said to the Venerable Ananda: "Ananda, whose is this dried rice that has been spread out so much? Where does the Venerable Black, who practices this, reside near which village or town? In the morning, he puts on his lower garment, takes his bowl and Dharma robes, and goes to that village or town, being very careful in body, with his senses well controlled, and with mindfulness well established, he goes for alms. If he obtains wet rice, he receives it with his bowl. If he obtains dry rice, he receives it with the container of his bowl. After going for alms in that village or town, he comes to the monastery and cooks the wet rice. He fills new earthenware pots with the dry rice and stores it. When a cold wind blows, or a famine occurs, or heavy rain falls, or a strong wind arises, at such times when a cold wind blows, or a famine occurs, or heavy rain falls, or a strong wind arises, he soaks the dry rice in warm water, cooks it, and experiences the happiness of meditation, liberation, and samadhi. Ananda, do the monks eat stored food? Venerable one, they do." Then, the Blessed One, regarding this event, this origin, and this occasion, convened the monastic community of monks, as before. Do the Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, knowingly commit offenses? And so on, as before. The Buddha, the Blessed One, rebuked the Venerable Black: "Black, is it true that you eat stored food?" "Venerable One, it is not." The Buddha, the Blessed One, acts without diligence, without effort, and without examination.
