If there are two places, namely the base place and the house place, then among those in these places, those who eat in the base place should ask: 'Venerable monks, have you come from the house place?' If they eat without asking, they will commit a misdeed. Those who eat in the house place should also ask: 'Venerable monks, have you come from the base place?' If they eat without asking, they will commit a downfall. Three people eat and one is in charge, three have fully taken the vows and one has not fully taken the vows, distributing food, even if it is just a handful of salt, or about an ounce of vegetables, and the respective places are determined, if the donor says: 'I give to those who are sitting here.' then there is no downfall. There is no downfall for beginners, the insane, the mentally disturbed, and those who are afflicted by feelings. The downfall of eating together, this thirty-sixth ends. The Buddha Bhagavan was staying in Jeta Grove Anathapindika's Monastery in Shravasti. At that time, the venerable Mahamoggallana's son and others, a group of seventeen young men, were well guided and fully ordained. After that, they put on their skirts in the morning, took their bowls and robes, and went to Shravasti to beg for food. Since the realm of women is the practice of desire, the women saw them and beat their chests, saying: 'Why didn't these people's parents fill their mouths with salt or carry them on their laps when they were just born?' The group of seventeen became frightened and said: 'It is not appropriate for us to hear such harsh words when we are begging for food.' So they immediately returned and stopped begging for food. They tried their best to maintain the radiance of their bodies and do good deeds. When the radiance of their bodies disappeared, they fell down and slept. Nanda saw them and said: 'Alas, group of seventeen, is the food someone else's?' Do you think the food is also someone else's? No matter how many good deeds you do, you can't eat like this! Who ate it?'

Did you eat? We didn't eat. Then why are you snoring in your sleep? They described the situation in detail. The women of the city, who loved gardens, took food and drink and went out of Shravasti to the Victory Grove. While they were eating and drinking, the seventeen groups saw them and patted their bellies, reciting verses: O Protector, many good words of yours circulate in this world of cause and non-cause. There is no bodily sensation like hunger; the Able One, your words are the best. They said: Holy ones, would you like to eat? We would like to eat. They gave food and drink to the seventeen groups, who enjoyed it, and then they walked together and began to recite. Nanda saw them reciting and said: Alas, the seventeen groups are very diligent! Venerable Nanda, the Blessed One is declaring the true Dharma. When a giver and a patron give food to a recipient, they give five things: They give life, they give beauty, they give strength, they give happiness, and they give eloquence, which leads to happiness. This teaching is well said, for eating brings eloquence, and not eating does not. Did you eat? I ate. Is it permissible for you to eat at an improper time? If we do not find food in time, should we starve to death? Why do the few monks reproach the monks for eating food at an improper time? The monks reported to the Blessed One about the throwing of things and the abusive language. Then, because of this event, this origin, and this occasion, the Blessed One convened the monastic community of monks, and so on, as before. The Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, knowingly commit offenses, and so on, as before. The Buddha, the Blessed One, rebuked the seventeen groups of monks: Monks, you at an improper time

Is chewing and eating truly swallowing and consuming? There are no monks. The Buddha, the Bhagavan, thoroughly rebuked, saying that what is not the conduct of a renunciate, what is not in accordance, what is not permissible, what is not in accordance with the Dharma, that is not what should be done by one who has gone forth. Then, after the Bhagavan had thoroughly rebuked in various ways, he addressed the monks, saying: Monks, therefore, having properly seen the ten benefits, the basis of training for the hearers should be established in the Vinaya, and so forth, as before. My hearers should recite the basis of training in the Vinaya in this way: Again, whatever monk chews or eats at an improper time commits a downfall. Again, whoever is called a monk is one of the seventeen groups, or any other such person. Improper time means two improper times: before dawn and after noon. Chewing or eating means the five chewables and the five edibles. Swallowing or eating means swallowing into the throat. A downfall means burning sentient beings in hell, animals, hungry ghosts, bad destinies, bad migrations, and places of falling. It burns, torments, and causes to fall. Furthermore, as long as that downfall is not confessed and not individually confessed, it obstructs virtuous dharmas. Therefore, it is said to be a downfall. How does it become a downfall? If a monk chews and eats, swallowing or consuming, with the perception of an improper time as an improper time, it becomes a downfall. If a monk eats with doubt at an improper time, chewing and eating, swallowing or consuming, it becomes a downfall. If a monk chews and eats, swallowing or consuming, with the perception of an improper time as the proper time, it becomes a misdeed. If a monk eats with doubt at the proper time, chewing and eating, swallowing or consuming, it becomes a misdeed. There is no downfall for the first practitioner, the madman, the disturbed in mind, and those afflicted by feelings. This thirty-seventh downfall of eating at an improper time is complete. The Buddha, the Bhagavan, was dwelling in Jetavana in Anathapindika's Grove in Shravasti. The venerable Black One everywhere
