The meaning of "thinking to make him commit an offense" is thinking that this monk will definitely be made to fall into transgression. The meaning of "having that as a condition" is not other than that. The meaning of "O venerable one, eat this! Drink this!" is food and drink. The meaning of "without leaving any remainder" is without having left any remainder, without having discarded, without having completely abandoned. The meaning of "food and drink" is the five kinds of food and the five kinds of drink. The meaning of "strengthening by time" is strengthening again and again. The meaning of "a cause of falling" is that it burns, cooks, and causes to fall into sentient being hells, animals, hungry ghosts, bad destinies, bad migrations, and wrong views. Furthermore, as long as that transgression is not confessed and not individually confessed, it obstructs virtuous dharmas. Therefore, it is called a cause of falling. How does one fall into transgression? When a monk knows a little, and after a monk has finished eating and relinquished the food, he seeks an opportunity, thinking, "I must make this monk commit an offense," and with that as the cause, saying, "O venerable one, eat this! Drink this!" If the food and drink without remainder are strengthened by time, then all of it becomes a cause of falling. There is no transgression for the first-time offender, the insane, the mentally disturbed, and those afflicted by feelings. The thirty-fifth transgression, which is strengthened by relinquishment, is completed. The Vinaya-vibhaṅga, the fifty-third fascicle. The Buddha, the Bhagavan, was dwelling in Rajagriha, in the Bamboo Grove, at the place of Kalandaka. At that time, Devadatta, together with many monks, gathered in the monastery, ate food, and then reproached, saying, "Why do a few monks gather and eat food in the monastery?" They reproached, mocked, and spoke harshly. At that time, the monks informed the Blessed One. Then the Blessed One said, "Because of this event, because of this basis, because of this occasion, the Sangha gathers the monks," and so on, as before. The Buddhas, the Bhagavat, act knowingly, and so on, also as before.

The Blessed One Buddha rebuked Devadatta. Devadatta, is it true that you and many monks gather together in the monastery and eat? Venerable one, it is true. The Blessed One Buddha rebuked, saying, this is not the conduct of a Shramana, it is not in accordance, it is not proper, it is not in accordance with the rules, this is not what a renunciant should do. Then, after rebuking in various ways, the Blessed One said to the monks: Monks, therefore, you should truly see the ten benefits, and thereby establish the basis of learning for the Shravakas in the Vinaya. And so on, as before. My Shravakas should recite the basis of learning in the Vinaya in this way: if they gather together and eat, they will commit a transgression. The Blessed One thus established the basis of learning in the Vinaya for the Shravakas. Many sick monks went to the doctor's residence, and when they saw him, they said: Wise one, please prescribe some medicine for us. The doctor said: Holy ones, please take some porridge. Who will give it? I will offer it. Is it offered to all the Sangha? No, only to the sick monks. Wise one, the Blessed One has established the basis of learning for gathering together and eating. Holy ones, your teacher is compassionate, and if you make that the cause, he will allow it, there is such a situation. At that time, the monks reported to the Blessed One, and the Blessed One said: Therefore, except for when you are sick. After the monks had done the work of the Sangha and the stupa, they were tired and lay down because they were hungry, and they could not devote themselves to virtue. Brahmins and faithful householders came to the temple and asked: Holy ones, we should devote ourselves wholeheartedly to the Dharma, why are you tired and lying down, and not devoting yourselves to virtue? They said: We are hungry. Why don't you use porridge? Who will give it? We will offer it. Is it offered to all the Sangha? No, only to you. Wise ones, the Blessed One
